United Airlines Flights

United Airlines is the world's third largest airline based on revenue, and a founding member of the Star Alliance group. With their massive fleet of over 730 aircraft, United fly to more than 340 destinations across the world. As well as operating flights to a huge number of American destinations (United is headquartered in Chicago), the airline also has a big presence across Asia Pacific. Their frequent flyer programme is Mileage Plus, which has been named the Best Frequent Flyer Program by Global Traveler magazine on numerous occasions. Points can be spent on flights, unique travel experiences, and entertainment rewards.

United offer flights from Dublin to New York Newark, and to Washington DC. United also fly from Shannon to New York Newark. US Security pre-clearance is available at both of these airports, so once you land stateside you can just sail through as if you were getting off a domestic flight.

Why Fly with United Airlines

How to Check In

Online check-in opens 24 hours before your flight's scheduled departure time. This is the fastest and easiest way to check in for your United Airlines flight. You can do this online, from their mobile landing page, or using the United app. If you'd rather not check-in online, you can do it at the self-service kiosk (when available) or by popping over the United Airlines desk. Check-in on domestic routes closes 30 minute before departure. This rises to 60 minutes on international routes, and 90 minutes on trips to the Marshall Islands and Micronesia.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

Economy passengers can check in one 23kg bag free of charge on flights from Ireland to the USA. Your second bag will be charged at US $100, and $200 for a third bag. There's also a $200 charge for any bags that are overweight or oversized. Business and first class passengers get extra weight (32kg), as do those with Gold and above Mileage Plus status.

As for hand luggage, each passenger can bring one case measuring 22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm (including any wheels or handles) and a personal item measuring 22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm. Note that Basic Economy passengers can only bring the smaller, personal item.

You can select your own seat, unless you're flying on a Basic Economy ticket. You can do this online, via the United app, or at the airport when you check in. You can purchase an extra seat if you're travelling with a musical instrument, another large fragile item, or if you believe that you'll need some extra space due to your size. Seat pitch (legroom) and width differ depending on which aircraft is used.

Booking fees

There are no additional charges for booking flights with United online.

Service on board

On long-haul flights, meals are included in your ticket-price. This includes a beer or a glass of wine. United have entered into a collaboration with The Trotter Project to mentor young chefs. On shorter haul flights, passengers can sample these dishes from the Choice Menu Bistro on Board. There's a wide range of snacks available on board too, if you just want something small to nibble. United offers one of the most expansive in-flight entertainment services, streaming films and TV shows to your own personal device. In-flight Wi-Fi is available on flights between the USA and Ireland, so you can stay connected when you're up in the air.

United Airlines are generally very punctual, with nearly eight out of ten flights departing within 15 minutes of scheduled departure during 2016. The average delay was 16.3 minutes during this time period.
