In 1926 a biplane owned by Charles A Lindbergh began delivering mail from Chicago to St Louis. In 1929 it became part of a conglomerate that was to become American Airlines. With its headquarters now in Fort Worth, Texas, American Airlines operates a vast international and domestic network of flights, carrying over 190 million passengers every year to over 80 domestic and 83 international destinations across South America, Europe and Asia.

How to Check In

American Airlines offers online, self service, mobile and airport check-in options. Online and mobile check-in is available from 24 hours up to 1 hour before scheduled departure, allowing passengers to check-in luggage, print their boarding passes and select seats prior to boarding. Bags have to be dropped off at the designated drop off point on arrival at the airport. Self service airport kiosks enable passengers to check-in speedily up to 3 hours before flight departure or alternatively they can go to one of the manned check-in desks at the airport. American Airlines recommends passengers check-in 90 minutes before departure if checking-in bags. Travellers without hold luggage they can check-in 1 hour before departure. Priority check-in is also available for customers in First and Business class.

Baggage Allowance and Fees

The permitted cabin baggage allowance on American Airlines is 1 cabin bag and 1 personal item per person. The maximum dimensions of the cabin bag are 56cm x 35cm x 23cm. For passengers wanting to place luggage in the hold there is a charge per bag. The first bag on Economy flights is $25 each way and $35 for a second bag and must not exceed 23kg each. For some European, Indian and Canadian destinations charges may not apply. Please check with the airline for more information. Business and First class travellers may check-in up to three pieces of hold luggage free of charge. Excess baggage is charged at a rate of $150 per piece each way.


Assigned seating is allocated by American Airlines free of charge; however, should Economy customers wish to specify either a window or aisle seat or one with more legroom, additional charges will be incurred. Please check with the airline as they vary depending on the type of ticket and destination. Flat bed seats are offered free of charge to passengers in First and Business class.

Booking Fees

American Airlines charge a flat rate of £4.50 per ticket for bookings paid for by credit card or via Paypal. Debit cards do not incur any additional fees.

Service on Board

Wifi is now available for purchase on all American Airlines flight. Costs vary from $8 for a smartphone day pass to $36 for an all 3-day pass package and $49.95 for an unlimited pass, useful for requents flyers. It is also available to purchase on a hourly basis, costing $12 for 2 hours usage or $19 for the duration of one flight. Advantage Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members in Economy class are offered a complimentary beverage in addition to one snack or meal. Business and First class travellers are given a complimentary three course meal including drinks. Entertainment on board consists of personal TV screens showing a selection of over 250 movies, 80 TV programs, music channels and up to 20 video games. Amenity kits are also available free of charge as well as an in-flight magazine.
