Spirit Airlines Flights

Spirit Airlines is a low-cost airline based in Florida, USA. Their flight network mainly consists of routes throughout the Americas, particularly the USA, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Latin America and South America. Their frequent flyer program is called Free Spirit. The airline prides itself on its low cost credentials. Its listing on the NASDAQ stock market is 'SAVE' and their slogan is "less money, more go." Similar to European low-fare airlines, Spirit offer a no-frills service. Additional baggage, and on-board food and drink, cost extra. Spirit has the youngest fleet of any major US airline, and flies to more than 59 destinations.

As Spirit Airlines mainly focuses their operations in the Americas, they operate no flights to or from Ireland. If you're planning a big trip around the USA or South and Central America, their flight deals are well worth watching out for.

Why Fly With Spirit Airlines?

How to Check In

Online check in is recommended to Spirit Airlines customers as the fastest way to get their boarding card. Another added bonus is that it's free, while checking in at the airport desk will incur a fee of US $10. There are also kiosks at the airport where you can check yourself in for free and print out your boarding card. Online check in opens 24 hours before departure, and closes one hour before.

Seating

Your seat will be assigned for free when you check in, but if you'd prefer to choose your own seat you can: but you'll need to pay. Prices for choosing a seat range from $1 to $50 depending on where you want to sit. If you want to sit in one of the extra comfortable "Big Front Seats" you'll pay $12 to $199 if you book in advance, or $25 to $75 if you get the chance to upgrade on board. Spirit Airlines boasts one of America's smallest seat pitches (the distance between seats), at a cosy 28 inches. This is one inch less than Ryanair and EasyJet.

Booking Fees

There are no additional fees for booking your Spirit Airlines flight online. If you book through their call centre, you'll need to pay a charge of US $35. Group bookings also incur a charge of $5 per booking.

Service On Board

As Spirit is a no-frills airline, there's no complimentary food and drink service on board. Peckish passengers can buy snacks and drinks, however, with prices ranging from $1 to $10. Cash isn't accepted on board, so you'll need to pay for your sandwich and soda with your credit or debit card.

Punctuality

In the year to April 2016, Spirit Airlines only had a 68% on time record meaning that slightly fewer than 7 out of every 10 flights arrived on time. The airline announced that they would be making moves to improve their punctuality, so watch this space.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

Baggage fees vary depending on flight route. It's best to check your ticket for up to date details.

Hand luggage: You can bring one small personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag, on board for free (as long as it fits under the seat in front of you). This should measure no more than 45 x 35 x 20cm You need to pay extra to bring a larger carry-on bag, and this should be no larger than 56 x 46 x 25cm.

Hold luggage: All hold bags need to be paid for. Each one should measure no more than 158cm total, or weigh more than 18.1kg. Bags heavier than this will incur an added charge. Bags that weigh over 45kg or measure more than 203cm total are not suitable for carriage, and will be left behind.
