Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport is the gateway to the West of Ireland, with its stunning coastline and quaint historic towns. The romantic landscape of Donegal, and the vibrant cities of Limerick and Galway (with its annual oyster festival) continue to draw tourists through the doors of Shannon Airport year after year.

Shannon Airport is the first European airport to offer United States pre-clearance, so if you’re flying to the United States, Shannon Airport is one of the best departure points. Pre-clearance means that your luggage is checked by United States customs before you board your flight, meaning a swifter onward journey once you arrive in America.

As well as extra security for travellers flying across the pond, Shannon Airport offers every convenience for the short haul traveller too. There’s a small oratory in the airport for those who like to pray before they fly, with mass every Sunday, and a cafe in the departure hall where you can fill up with a delicious full Irish breakfast. Red-eye travellers will be glad to find the Segafredo coffee bar open from 6am serving up hot drinks and baked goods, perfect for opening even the bleariest of eyes.

Before jumping on your flight and heading home, make sure to pick up some last minute gifts and souvenirs to remind yourself of your time in Ireland. Nab a bottle of whisky or some luxury local produce at The Loop, or keep it simple with a box of Ireland’s famous Barry’s Tea from Londis.

For that final Irish pub experience you can’t go wrong with an Irish Coffee at The Sheridan Food Pub; named for a former chef at Shannon Airport who is credited with inventing the Irish Coffee back in 1943. The Sheridan Food Pub still stick to the original recipe, so there’s one thing to tick off your bucket list while you’re waiting at Shannon Airport for your flight to depart.
