There are five car hire companies with desks at Albany Airport: Enterprise, Avis, Hertz, Budget and National/Alamo. All of the desks are inside the terminal, so you don’t need to go far to pick up your car.
Petrol stations near Albany Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
Luckily there is a Hess petrol station just a 7 minute drive from Albany Airport. Simply head northwest towards the NY-155, make a u-turn, continue on Albany Shaker Road and turn right onto Wolf Road. The petrol station will be on the right hand side.
Driving around Albany Airport
Albany Airport is well connected to the region’s main roads. The interstate’s 87, 88 and 90 all run from the airport. The I-87 travels north to New York and Montreal and south to Albany while the I-90 heads west to Buffalo and east to Boston. There are many exits into Albany from I-90, and a lovely view of the skyline between exits 6 and 7.

The drive from Albany Airport to New York is approximately 3 hours. From the airport, get on to the I-87 which is a partial toll road, then exit at 15 for NY-17 towards New Jersey. Continue until the Lincoln Tunnel and exit at 17 for the NJ-496 then the US 1/US 9. Merge onto the NJ-3 and then the NJ-139. Get on to the I-78 toll road and continue following signs for New York City.

Boston is a three hour drive from Albany Airport. Head southwest and take the I-787 ramp. Follow signs for the I-90 and Boston.

Albany is just a 20 minute drive from the airport. Head northwest getting on to the I-87 and continue to the I-90 towards Boston then take exit 6A towards Albany.
Albany has a mixture of parking lots, garages and metered on-street parking to choose from. Most parking lots charge from between 8am and 5pm with prices starting at $1 per hour. Weekends are free. Pay and Display metered parking is charged from Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm and costs from $1 per hour. Check the time limit as some are a couple of hours while others go up to 12. Some hotels in Albany also offer free parking.
