Car Hire from Bangor Airport

Car Hire from Bangor Airport

The USA’s state of Maine is famous for its coastal towns, iconic lighthouses and excellent seafood. Up in the Highlands Region, there are lots of adventure activities to enjoy in the scenic wilderness. Starting from Bangor, you’re within easy reach of both the dramatic highlands and the dynamic coast, especially when you hire a car from Bangor Airport.

Where to hire a car at Bangor Airport

There are a number of car hire companies operating at Bangor Airport. These include Avis, Budget, Hertz, Alamo and National. The car hire offices are all located inside the terminal building, opposite the baggage claim area on the first floor of the Domestic Terminal.

Petrol Stations near Bangor Airport

If your car hire agreement has a “full to full” fuel policy you will need to refuel it before returning it.

The closest petrol station to Bangor Airport is called Foster’s Airport on the Run. It’s just four minutes’ drive from the airport terminal and can be found by turning right onto Union Street.

Driving around Bangor Airport

Bangor Airport is well connected to a number of major road routes. The I-95 heads north towards Medway and south west towards Waterville. Route 1 runs close to the coast and offers access to many coastal towns. Route 9 runs east towards Beddington and the Canadian border while route 2 runs west towards Farmington.

The state of Maine is full of spectacular driving routes. However, it’s worth noting that route 1 is not as scenic as it looks on a map. Despite running close to the coast, it isn’t close enough for good views of the sea. I-95 is a quicker alternative for drivers travelling along a north-south route.

Getting to your destination

With a rental car from Bangor Airport, you’re close to many of the state’s highlights. Here are just a few of them:

Bangor is a university city with a lively nightlife and arts scene. The small city is located in Maine’s Highland region and offers easy access to a range of outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains and lakes. During the winter snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing attract lots of visitors while the summer is popular for white water rafting and moose safaris.

Bangor Airport offers very easy access to Bangor city. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach the centre by car, taking route 222 away from the airport. There is plenty of parking available throughout the city. However, in winter months (between 1st November and 31st March) street parking in the city is prohibited between midnight and 6am. This is to allow for snow removal vehicles to pass through the city. The Abbott Square car park offers a maximum of 24 hour parking for $4.50.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is situated on Mount Desert Island, connected to the mainland by a sandbar at low tide. Boat tours leave from Bar Harbor every day and include whale watching adventures. The village itself is quaint and picturesque with galleries, boutiques and a beautiful waterfront. Acadia National Park, with plenty of scenic hiking and cycling trails, can also be found close by.

Bar Harbor is around an hour and 15 minutes’ drive from Bangor Airport, taking route 1A south to the coast. A free parking space on the sandbar may look tempting but unless you’re very sure of the tides, it is best avoided. There are a number of street parking spaces and car parks around the town. If you’re planning an extended stay on the island, it’s worth noting that no vehicle is allowed to park in a street space or car park for more than 72 hours.

Greenville is a small town providing access to the impressive Moosehead Lake. It’s the largest lake in the state and offers great outdoor activities including fishing, kayaking, canoeing, cross country skiing and mountain biking. The town is home to a number of restaurants, hotels and craft shops.

Greenville is around 90 minutes’ drive from Bangor Airport, taking route 15 north west. It’s a small town so finding a parking space is usually very easy.
