Car Hire at Bern Airport

Bern is the capital city of Switzerland, located in the inner east part of the country. It’s a beautiful city, with many ornate laneways and a centre that’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Where to hire a car in Bern Airport
There are a number of car hire companies available to use in Bern Airport. You’re able to hire a car from Sixt, Hertz, Thrifty, Alamo, Budget, National, Europcar, Avis and Enterprise. Most car hire offices are located inside the Terminal building, however Sixt is located outside of the airport on Flugplatzstrasse. This is just a 5 minute walk from the entrance, however they do offer a meet & greet service if you happen to have luggage.
Petrol stations close to Bern Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
The closest petrol station is about 15 minutes away from Bern Airport. Exit the airport and turn left onto Muristrasse. Continue for 3.2km then turn right onto Bernstrasse. Continue straight for about 1km, driving past the small shops, then take the 3rd exit at the roundabout. Turn right onto Seftigenstrasse (the first turn on your right) and continue towards the gas station on your right.
Driving around Bern Airport
The roads around Bern Airport are in a good condition, and are well sign posted. The airport is 20 minutes away from the city, which means it’s typically not over crowded either. Occasionally it can be difficult to drive around in winter due to bad weather conditions. Bern is well connected to the rest of the country with a motorway network, including the A6, one of Switzerland’s’ largest roads.
Popular destinations to drive to from Bern Airport
The city of Bern is built on the River Aare, and it’s most well known for it’s architecturally stunning Old Town. The city has been granted UNESCO World Heritage Status, making it pretty high on the list of ‘must-sees’ in Switzerland.
The city of Bern is located 11km north of the airport. It’s just a short 20-minute drive away, which makes it easy to reach if you’re on a quick stopover in Bern. To reach the city turn left onto Muristrasse when you leave the airport, and continue for 3.2km. Turn right onto Bernstrasse, and continue for another 3km (this street will become Seftigenstrasse). Head past the restaurants, then turn right onto Sandrainstrasse. Continue for around 500m, heading straight through the first roundabout and turning right on the next roundabout. Continue on Schwellenmattstrasse, then turn right onto Marienstrasse. Continue across the bridge into the city of Bern.
It can be difficult to find parking in Bern as much of the city is pedestrianized. You can apply for a parking spot permit at railway stations and tourist offices – these are small discs you can display in your car if you wish to use on street parking. If not, opt for the Pay & display options around the city. The Casino car park is very popular with visitors to Bern, due to it’s proximity to the Old Town.
Lake Thun is an area of outstanding natural beauty, just an hour away from Bern. It’s particularly popular in summer.
To reach Lake Thun, turn right when exiting the airport to head towards the A6. Continue south for 13km, then take exit 16. This will take you into the town of Thun, a picturesque Swiss town with plenty of hotels to spend the night in. On street parking is easier to find here, but it’s better to use your hotel’s own car park to avoid potential fines.
Jungfrau Winter Sports Region
Jungfrau is a popular ski resort in the south of Switzerland, situated on the south end of Lake Thun. To reach it, follow the A6 from the airport for 25km, merging onto the A8 and following the signs for Jungfrau. This is much harder to reach when there is worse weather conditions, particularly during winter. This is also the way to reach Grindelwald Winter Resort.
