There are two car hire companies with desks at Dar Es Salaam Airport: Tanzania Rent a Car and Avis. All of the desks are inside the terminal, so you don’t need to go far to pick up your car.
Petrol stations near Dar Es Salaam Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
Luckily there is a Puma petrol station located close the airport site, just 4 minutes by car. Head southeast on Julius K Nyerere Road and take the left at the first crossroads onto Julius K Nyerere Road. The petrol station will be on the left hand side.
Driving around Dar Es Salaam Airport
Dar Es Salaam Airport is located just 12km from the centre of Dar Es Salaam. The airport access road is reached from Nyerere Road (formerly known as Pugu Road), which connects to the centre of Dar es Salaam to the northeast. The road connecting Tanzania with Zambia is in good condition, as is the road north to Kenya. From Lusaka in Zambia, the Great North Road is excellent all the way to Dar es Salaam.

The ferry takes just over 2 hours. When you get to Zanzibar, take a left onto Mzingani Road, take the second exit at the roundabout and turn right on to Mlandege Road. Merge onto Karume Road and then right on to Felix Moumie Road.

Dar Es Salaam is just 11 minutes by car from Dar Es Salaam Airport. Turn right off Julius K Nyerere Road and then left at the crossroads. Follow signs to the centre of Dar Es Salaam.
When parking on the street in Dar Es Salaam, find a spot to park, lock your doors and leave. When you return, a parking attendant wearing a yellow florescent vest will approach you for payment. The fee is 300 Tzs for one hour. The attendant should either hand you a ticket or it will already be on your windshield. Some hotels in Dar Es Salaam also offer free parking.
