Where to hire a car at Madeira Airport

Petrol stations close at Madeira Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
The closest petrol station is just a 5-minute drive away from Madeira Airport. Turn left when you leave the airport to merge onto the VR1. Continue for 800 metres, and the destination will be on your right at the roundabout.
Driving around at Madeira Airport
Madeira Airport is on the coast of Madeira, in Portugal. There’s a network of highways on the island that make it very easy to get from one area to another. The speed limit within cities tends to be around 40kph, which extends to 100 on motorways. Although driving is generally straight forward, there are a few windy cobbled streets that make it slightly more difficult.
Parking is generally easy to find in more rural areas, however twhen in cities there are Pay & Display and multi-story options available.
Popular destinations to drive to from Madeira Airport
Funchal is the largest city in Madeira, and although it has routes in transport and trade, it’s now a modern city with everything you might need on a city break in Madeira.
Car parking is tricky in Funchal, due to it being such a busy place. There are good car parks by the shopping centres, and some hotels have car parking facilities too.
Keep left when you exit the airport to stay on the VR1 moving southbound. Take exit 11 onto the Rue Mestre Siddoni, and continue on this road until you reach the roundabout. Take the third exit to get south into Funchal.
Faial is a charming little port on the north east coast of Madeira, characterized by it’s dramatic landscape. The cliffs line azure blue coastline provides the perfect backdrop to dinner in one of the restaurants by the water.
Faial is easy to reach from the airport, it’s just north of Machico in land. To reach Faial, turn left when exiting the airport, and continue onto the VR1. Turn left onto the Ve8 to reach the city. After driving for 33km, you’ll be able to merge back onto the A1.
Calheta is on the south west coast of Madeira, and it’s packed with natural beauty. Travellers usually come here for the beautiful ocean, the four wheel driving and the boat trips to see the whales.
It takes less than an hour to reach Calheta. Exit the airport onto the VR1, then merge onto the VE3 in Ribeira Brava by taking exit 1. Continue on this road, then drive onto the ER222 after 30km. Continue for 17km to reach Calheta.
