Avis, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National all have car hire desks located inside Portland Airport’s terminal building. They’re based close to the baggage reclaim area in between Concourse E and Concourse B.

There’s a petrol station seven minutes’ drive from the airport terminal. It’s a 7-Eleven service station located on Northeast Glenn Widing Drive, at the end of Northeast Airport Way and across from route 205. At all petrol stations in Portland an attendant will fill your car for you.

Driving around Portland Airport

From the airport, route 205 heads north to across the Columbia River and south towards Sunnyside and Oregon City. Route 30B travel east to west, connecting to route 204 and route 5, a main highway heading south into Portland city centre and north across the state border to Vancouver. Portland Airport is located in the state of Oregon, very close to the state border with Washington. If you are planning on driving between states, be sure to check with your car hire company as to any additional fees or insurance issues.

Smart Park car parks are the cheapest place to park in the city centre. They charge $1.60 per hour with flat fees for stays of over four hours. Metered street parking is also available and it’s free during evenings and on Sunday mornings.

Mount Hood National Forest

Mount Hood National Forest is a popular nature spot for Portland residents looking to escape the city. Its forests, lakes and streams provide opportunity for some great outdoor activities. Visitors to the forest can go kayaking, fishing, hunting, horse riding, hiking and, during winter months, skiing and sledding.
Mount Hood National Forest is a 65 minute drive from Portland Airport, taking route 205 south and then route 26 east. There are a number of car parks around the park. During winter months roads and car parks are subject to closure so it’s wise to check the forest website for updates.

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is a city on Oregon’s coastline. The city has four miles of sandy beaches where you can go surfing, rent beach bikes and fly kites. There’s lots of wildlife to see at Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park and a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants in the city centre.
It takes just under two hours to travel from Portland Airport to Cannon Beach, taking route 205 and route 84 into Portland city centre before heading westwards on route 26. Cannon Beach is a small city and, despite a few pedestrianised roads, it’s generally easy to navigate.
