Car Hire in Faro
Hire a car in Faro and experience some of Portugal's most stunning scenery. Explore the rugged cliffs along the Atlantic coast, visit the Algarve's exciting theme parks, or spend a lazy day driving through the wildflower-dotted hills. Whatever you want to do, Faro car hire is a great addition to your holiday.
Where to Hire a Car in Faro
Because Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, there are lots of car hire companies based in and around the city. You'll find most of the car hire companies near Faro Airport. Companies like Avis, Thrifty and Goldcar have car hire offices at Faro Airport, while other agencies like InterRent and Golfauto Rent-A-Car are located just outside the airport grounds, on the N-125 road.
If you're based in Faro city centre and want to rent a car for the day, you'll have more rental options if you take a bus to the airport. City centre options include To-See Rent-A-Car (beside the train station), as well as RealCar and Drive4Miles (just outside the old town). Car hire in Faro is especially popular during August, so book your vehicle as far in advance as possible.
Tips for Driving in Faro
Faro can be a tricky city to navigate, with lots of narrow streets and one-way systems. If you're renting your car from Faro Airport, it's easy to get straight onto the toll-free N-125 road which runs from east to west along the Algarve. You need to pay to use the motorway, and tolls are paid automatically in Portugual. Your car hire agency should provide you with a scanner to make this easier, as paying tolls can be complicated if you don't have one in your vehicle.
The Algarve's roads are easy to drive on, but do get very busy during the high season (June to August). Locals aren't used to wet weather (lucky them) so watch out for erratic driving during and after rainstorms. As always, it's best to drive defensively and keep your wits about you. The Portuguese, like most Europeans, drive on the right-hand side of the road.

When you hire a car in Faro, the Algarve is at your fingertips. Here are some of our favourite Faro day trips.
Best for kids: Slide and Splash Slide and Splash waterpark is around 40 minutes' drive from Faro if you take the motorway, or one hour if you use the toll-free N-124 road. This Algarve theme park is open from 10am to 6pm during the summer season only. As well as pools, slides and rides, it also boasts a small petting zoo with lizards and tropical birds.
Best for scenery: Monchique From Faro, it takes just over an hour to reach the mountain town of Monchique. The town is famous for its medronho liquor and local honey. The waters of Monchique are believed to have healing properties, and you can visit the local spa (the Termal das Caldas de Monchique) if you want to test that theory The hiking trails are popular during the spring and autumn.
Best for history buffs: Silves It takes around 45-55 minutes to drive to Silves from Faro Airport, depending on whether you use the motorway or toll-free road. This traditional town was once the capital of the region, and the Medieval castle was a Moorish stronghold. The town is still steeped in history, with lots of quaint cobblestoned streets to explore (and some rustic roadside piri-piri chicken restaurants to sample, too).
