Where and What to Hire
Being a rather remote area, Lands End has limited options for car hire; however Europecar, Direct Van Hire, Alamo, Yello Car and National Car are all located close to Penzance railway station. Lands’ End Airport offers the option of hiring a car with Enterprise or Europecar. Sennen, Saint Just, Newlyn, Mousehole, Penzance, Carbis Bay and St Ives are a few nearby places that also offer care hire. Between them a variety of cars are available from nippy city two-doors and hatchbacks to larger family cars.
Driving in Lands End is a relatively relaxed experience with fewer cars on the road than in most cities. However, bank holidays can be busier than normal as visitors from Bristol and London travel to the coast for long weekends, so allow more time when travelling.
There are a few options for parking in Lands End. Parking in Lands End is only £5 for the whole day or there is parking in nearby Sennen Cove, which is walking distance. A weekly roving parking permit can be purchased for £35. Alternatively, there is a Park and Ride scheme that operates from Truro, Falmouth, St Ives, Padstow and Looe.
Where to Go and What to See
Of course, the most famous drive from Lands End is to John O’Groats, the most northerly tip of Scotland. A 15 hour drive in one go, this would make a great family holiday stopping in places such as Gloucester, Bath, Liverpool, Blackpool and the Lake District along the way. For dramatic coastal scenery, take a drive 20 miles along the shore the Lizards Point – the most southerly tip of Lands End. It is usually peaceful with few tourists, stunning views across the sea and even a little village with a cosy local pub and some shops. Families in Lands End with children, there are plenty of fun activities to choose from including Pirates Quest – an interactive experience with actors, shipwrecks and magical lands. Another is the Shaun the Sheep Experience, a lovely place with sets created by Aardman Animations. Kids can try their hand at stop-motion animation. Make the most of the hire car by touring the spectacular Cornish coast, including the ancient village of Penzance, just 20 minutes from Lands End or to the wonderful little harbour of Mousehole that clings to the cliffs, just 30 minutes from Lands End. 40 minutes north east of Lands End is the enchanting village of St Ives, with its narrow winding cobbled street, galleries, tea rooms and best Cornish pasties in the whole of the UK.
