City breaks to Budapest are always a good idea. Budapest is a city where east and west blend perfectly. With its grand Hapsburg buildings, Ottoman-era spas, and ruined buildings transformed into hipster bars, there are lots of Budapest travel highlights to discover.
Whether you know it as "the jewel of the Danube" or "Paris of the East", there are plenty of reasons why the Hungarian capital snagged a place on our coveted 7 most romantic city breaks in Europe list. The glittering river splits the city in two, with hilly Buda and its imperial palaces on one side and bustling Pest with its pavement cafés and top-notch restaurants on the other. 48 hours in Budapest
Once you've checked into your Budapest hotel, the best place to start your weekend is Castle Hill. This historic neighbourhood is packed with old world buildings and takes a few hours to explore. Enjoy the view from Fisherman's Bastion before enjoying a seasonal dinner at Meat Boutique. A visit to Ecseri Piac, one of Europe's biggest flea markets, should be on the cards for Saturday but if you don't have time to leave the centre during your city break go to Central Market instead. Try the local sweet wine, tokaji. After shopping, treat yourself to a soak at Gellert Bath. Once your fingers are wrinkly, head out for some traditional Hungarian food before grabbing a drink at Szimpla Kert, the first of the city's famous ruin bars. On Sunday, book in for the Lazy Brunch at the Intercontinental Hotel and dig into the huge buffet of Hungarian (and international) dishes.

Visiting Budapest in summer
Summer is a fantastic time for a city break in Budapest. It's warm, so you can really enjoy soaking in the three outdoor pools at Szechenyi Bath by day, and relax in the beer garden at Ellato Kert in the evening. Summer is also a time of festivals, with Vajdahunyadvár Summer Festival showcasing classical, swing and gypsy music while the Budapest Summer Festival involves open air performances on Margaret Island.
Visiting Budapest in Winter
The Hungarian capital has become a popular city break destination for people who love Christmas markets. Winter breaks in Budapest involve comforting cuisine, hot and steamy baths, and lavish breakfasts in cosy coffee shops. It's also a great time to catch ballet performances in the beautiful concert halls. The two main Budapest Christmas markets to visit are on Vorosmarty Sq and Basilica.
Budapest public transport
There are three subway lines and a network of trolley buses. Route 49 goes between Buda and Pest. Riverboats and ferries are also available.
