Wynwood, Miami guide

There was a time when Wynwood rarely appeared atop anyone’s Miami itinerary. But then the artists arrived and began covering the old warehouse walls with eye-popping murals. Galleries followed, then hip bars, restaurants and crowds of smartphone-toting visitors eager to capture it all. From where to eat to how to navigate the largest collection of street art in the US, our guide to Wynwood points you in the right direction.

Wynwood highlights

World-class street art

The 50 blocks that make up the Wynwood Art District is one of the largest open-air street art museums in the world. Its centrepiece is Wynwood Walls, a collection of buildings decorated with murals by some of the best-known street artists around, from Shepard Fairey and Invader to Os Gemeos and Vhils.

Graffiti tours

The best way to appreciate the art in Wynwood is with a guided tour. See the murals on foot or by golf cart, with a street artist on board providing expert commentary and insider tips. Some tours let you spray-paint your own graffiti art, while others include stops at some of the area’s renowned breweries.

Family fun

Once your little graffiti-artist-in-training has had their fill of street art, take them to the Paradox Museum. This interactive museum has more than 70 illusions and brain-teasing exhibits to keep their creativity flowing. In the gravity-defying Reverse Room, up is down and down is up. There’s even a ‘Paradox Piano’ that can have a musical conversation.

Things to do in Wynwood

Beaches

Wynwood doesn’t have its own beaches, but it’s only a 10-minute drive from Miami Beach. Cross the bridge to get to the neighbourhood of Mid-Beach, home to many luxury beachfront resorts. From the boardwalk, look left to see laid-back North Beach or right to gaze toward the bikini-clad playground of South Beach.

Museums and culture

With thousands of murals gracing its walls, Wynwood is known as an open-air museum. But there’s a lot of culture to be found indoors too. When it comes to museums in Wynwood, the Museum of Graffiti is an obvious place to start. And in-the-know art lovers recommend the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse and the Bakehouse Art Complex.

Restaurants

Art is everywhere in this neighbourhood. You’ll find that even the restaurants in Wynwood have great aesthetics — colourful decor, cool architecture and elegant plating. The food scene is buzzing with energy. Options range from exclusive reservations at omakase sushi restaurants to casual taco joints. And don’t miss out on the Cuban coffee shops or the huge Asian food hall hidden behind a tiny bodega.

Nightlife

Wynwood has a lot going on after dark, including a thriving craft beer scene. Breweries have sprouted up in former warehouses and amid lush tropical gardens. And you’ll have no problem finding trendy cocktail bars serving innovative drinks, intimate listening lounges where DJs spin vintage vinyl, and plenty of places to let loose and dance.

Shopping

If you’re looking for goods with local character, Wynwood is one of Miami’s best shopping neighbourhoods.  Stroll Northwest Second Avenue for some fantastic window shopping. The street is lined with lots of small, independently owned boutiques and artisan marketplaces where local designers and artists show off their wares.

Events

Held every December, Miami Art Week is one of the biggest events in the city. While many of the official proceedings happen at the convention centre, you’ll find tons of unofficial action in Wynwood. Think gallery shows, art fairs, live painting, street parties and more. There’s also Wynwood Pride every summer and a spooky HalloWYN block party in October.

FAQs about Wynwood holidays

Wynwood didn’t have many hotels until just recently. The ones that have opened in the last few years are on the small, independent side and cater to the art and design set. You’ll find more hotel options in nearby downtown.
Wynwood is renowned for its world-famous street art and creative, bohemian vibe. But before the arts scene took off, it was known as ‘Little Puerto Rico’ and as the garment district. You can still spot many Puerto Rican flags around the neighbourhood.
Wynwood’s rising popularity makes it feel relatively safe, especially when there’s a big event going on, and the streets are filled with people. But do take care after dark by sticking to populated areas and well-lit streets.
