Flights to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura’s landscapes are so extraordinary and otherworldly that UNESCO has awarded them Biosphere Reserve status in order to protect them. With stunning stretches of sandy coast, warm blues seas and blisteringly blue skies; where higgledy-piggledy whitewashed houses huddle together on its mountains, Fuerteventura is perfect for a peaceful family holiday. Those seeking more of an adrenalin rush will find plenty of high octane water-sports to enjoy from kite boarding to wind surfing and scuba diving.

Morro Jable is home to Sodabe Turtle Reserve where the ambling, majestic Loggerhead Turtle can be seen in its natural habitat. To the north of the island lies the beautiful village of La Olivia, once the political heart of Fuerteventura. Explore the grandeur of the Casa de los Coroneles townhouse where military governs used to reside, and the art centre Casa Mane showing painting and sculpture by local artists.

Kids will love to go on Camel Safari at La Lajtia Oasis Park as these docile creatures do the hard work and hike to the top of the mountain and around the lush Botanical Gardens. South of La Olivia lies Tefia; a village lost in time that recreates what life would have been like in a traditional Canarian village in its museum Ecomuseo de la Alcogida, showing crafts like weaving and cheese making.

Stop at Puerto del Rosario Harbour for shopping or take the weight off your feet in one of the lively, local cafes for delicious food with a sea view or visit the nearby home of exiled poet Miguel de Unamuno. Alternatively, relax on Fuerteventura’s beautiful beaches like Jandia in the south with its powdery white sands or Corralejo’s warm, shallow waters and chubby sand-dunes to the north. With Aloe Vera being the island’s most important export you needn’t worry about how to treat sunburn.

An experience not to be missed is hiking through the island’s other-worldly landscapes that resemble the surface of the moon, where vast plains of Aloe Vera grow like spiky cacti from the barren red earth. Walking tracks from Caleta de Fuste to Puerto del Rosario wind around the coast covering about 8 miles and provide some of the best views on the island.

Best Time to Visit

With almost constant sunshine, Fuerteventura is a great year-round holiday destination. Summer sees the hottest of the weather with temperature often over 30 degrees Celsius. This coincides with the busiest time of the year as tourists flock to catch the sun and make the most of Fuerteventura’s beautiful beaches. Spring and autumn are much quieter and cheaper times to visit and with temperatures in the more bearable 20 degree range – still perfect for sunbathing, swimming and strolling across the island.

Another reason to visit Fuerteventura is its many festivals. Carnival takes place in February while March sees the traditional Holy Week processions celebrating Semana Santa. In June the flower strewn streets during Corpus Christi are an incredible sight. Music festivals kick off from June through to August with international acts and jazz. Come November the International Kite Festival comes to town with some of the best ‘flyers’ from all over Europe.
