Samui International Airport is just 2km from Chaweng, the island's main resort. The airport has an unconventional, open-air setup. The gift shop, toilets, VIP lounge and other services are inside. You can easily get from the airport to your hotel using taxis or tuk-tuks, which are readily available outside the terminal.

When to visit Koh Samui

December to April is the high season on Koh Samui, with warm dry weather that's perfect for hitting the beach. The wet season lasts from May to September – although you'll still get more sun than you would in Ireland, be prepared for it to get a bit muggy.

If you're planning on heading to Koh Tao for a scuba diving day trip, it's best to avoid November and December. Whale sharks tend to hang out in the area in spring (March to May), and swimming alongside these gentle giants is well worth earning your PADI license for.

The weather in Koh Samui

The temperature in Koh Samui doesn't change much throughout the year, ranging from 26 to 30°C. October and November are the wettest months, with around two weeks of rain each month. It can get a bit humid during the summer, but most hotels and restaurants in Koh Samui have air conditioning.

Active visitors can indulge in the island's many water sports, while nature-lovers will enjoy hiking through the rainforest. A boat trip around the breathtaking Ang Thong National Marine Park is a must-do, with limestone formations to rival Vietnam's Ha Long Bay. Culture vultures should pay a visit to Big Buddha temple – just remember to cover your legs and chest to remain respectful. Hire a moped and explore the island's enclaves, which range from hip backpacker hotspots to luxurious resort towns.
