After a sunrise stroll near Lake Matheson (great photo opportunities if weather is good), try the restaurant nearby (we had both breakfast and a sunset dinner there) and then walk up to view Fox Glacier from the south trail. It is a 60 min walk each direction through a nice trail, over several bridges and ends with a fantastic view over the glacier. The second option is the 20 min, more common tourist trail, that brings you up to the Glacier (and if you want a guided tour - also on the Glacier). Worth a nice full day in the area!
This glacier is within relatively easy reach of the town of the same name. Even in the summer, the ice found there is spectacular. One does have to go up a trail a ways before actually getting to the ice. Definitely worth a visit if exploring the south island.
DO IT. I splurged & went on the helihike and I must say it was one of my favorite experiences in NZ. The tour guide was amazing, the view incredible! I got to fill up my water bottle with delicious glacial water. It was awesome.
This place is worth the expensive helihike!!!!!!!! DO IT! you'll go into ice caverns and drink glacial water and see beautiful sights. I highly recommend!
