Pamukkale means cotton castle in Turkish. These white limestone pools were once deposits from the hot spring waters flowing down. There was an ancient city named Hierapolis. One of the must see sights in Turkey.

Unfortunately this is a place that looks better in picture than reality. It's UNESCO heritage site but it is still being used by public - which makes the place look less interesting as thousands of vacationers flocked into the place to have a dip. Or perhaps I came at the wrong time or season. It's my second time visiting Pamukale, and it's during Summer again. Picture didn't come out nice.

Pamukkale is one of those under-the-radar destinations that isn’t always top of the must-see list. A quick Google search will show you photos of the hot springs, but the search results don’t make it immediately evident that there is a UNESCO World Heritage site (Turkey has 15!) mere steps from the sought-after bathing pools said to have healing properties. Walking through the Hierapolis is slightly reminiscent of Pompeii -- and, no surprise, Italian archaeologists are interested in the ruins here. While I can't blame you for preferring the hot springs, the ruins are a bigger draw for me.

You can join an organised tour from Yalikavak - it is quite a long day but well worth it. Alternatively you could hire a car and drive - the roads are really good and uncrowded - should take around 4 hours.
