November 2018 new flight routes from Ireland!

Check out the new flight routes from Ireland for winter 2018, including regular routes to Alicante and Santander in Spain, and a twice-weekly hop to the final resting place of Santa's bones.

Shannon to Alicante, Spain, with Ryanair

Twice weekly service extended all year round

Ryanair has a bevy of new flight routes planned for winter 2018. Last month we reported that the airline has new services to Frankfurt and Luxembourg from Dublin, but the company is also extending several other summer-only routes into the winter season.

If you’re after a bit of winter sun, then Alicante is a good bet, with average November temperatures of 16°C and highs of 20°C – and six hours of sunshine, to boot. We picked it out as one of our must-see destinations in Spain thanks to the quaint, narrow streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, a warren of whitewashed houses with fantastic tapas and seafood restaurants squirrelled away within.

Extra flights on November 19th and 20th for Republic of Ireland match

The Republic of Ireland football team will be taking on Denmark in the second leg of their UEFA Nations League match on November 19th, and Ryanair is laying on extra flights to ferry Ireland fans to the game. There’s a special flight leaving at 6.40am on Saturday 19th November, with a return flight the following day at 3.15pm – so you have plenty of time to explore Denmark’s second city.

The ARoS art museum is well worth a visit thanks to the rainbow-hued circular walkway on the roof, which provides fantastic views. And if you head to Moesgaard Museum you can see the eerie sight of a 2,000-year-old body that has been spookily well preserved in a bog, to the extent that researchers were able to take its fingerprints.

Cork to Paris with Air France

Seat capacity increased by 24% from October 28th

Air France is adding an extra 336 seats per week on its Cork to Paris flight route from the end of October. We found return flights to Paris with Air France from as little as €147 in November – but if you book ahead for next year, you can bag them for as little as €128.

Paris is a top place for a cheeky Christmas holiday – the always stupendous Xmas lights on the Champs Elysées are extra special this year due to the fact you can change their colours yourself by using a smartphone app. And it has an absolutely cracking Christmas market right outside Notre Dame Cathedral.

Dublin to Athens with Ryanair

Twice weekly flights now extended all year round

Ryanair is extending its summer flights to Athens into the winter season, which is great news if you’re planning to hike up to the Acropolis. This ancient citadel, the most famous historical site in Greece, is around 150 metres above sea level – which might not sound very far up, but it feels like an incredibly long way to walk during August, when temperatures in Athens reach blistering highs of 34°C. The far more reasonable November highs of 19°C make for a much more pleasant stroll to see these 2,500-year-old ruins.

Dublin to Bari, Italy, with Ryanair

Twice weekly flights now extended all year round

In what may be alarming news to millions of children, Bari in southern Italy hosts the bones of Santa Claus – or at least St Nicholas, the man whose gift giving gave rise to today’s Yuletide celebrations.

The Basilica of St Nicholas was built in Bari in the eleventh century to house the saint’s remains – which supposedly secrete a fragrant liquid that is said to have healing powers. This ‘manna’ is collected on December 6th each year, the feast day of St Nicholas – but sceptics claim the liquid is merely condensation. Still, whatever the truth, Bari is a welcomingly temperate place to visit over the festive season, with highs of around 13°C in December, and it’s a great base for exploring Puglia and southern Italy – you could even take a trip to the dream island of Capri.

Dublin to Marrakech with Ryanair

Twice weekly flights now extended all year round

Marrakech in Morocco is one of our top picks for holiday destinations in January 2019, partly because the city’s average temperatures in that month rival July in Ireland. One of the best reasons to visit Marrakech is to experience a hammam – a traditional steam room where you’re lathered with a black mineral soap called ghassoul and then rubbed down with an exfoliating glove called a kessa. I swear you will never feel as clean and fresh again in your life.

There are several high-class hammams across the city, like Les Bains de Marrakech and Hammam de La Rose, but for the last word in luxury you could always stay in the five-star Amanjena resort just outside the city, which has two hammams and a golf course right next door.

Dublin to Paphos, Cyprus, with Ryanair

Weekly flights now extended all year round

Sea Caves near Ayia Napa, Cyprus.

Cyprus is a pleasingly inexpensive place to visit – you’re looking at around €3 for a beer and €10 for a meal at a lower-end restaurant. And flights are remarkably cheap, too – we found a direct Ryanair flight from Dublin in January for just €71 return. The now-extended weekly Ryanair service heads out and returns every Saturday and takes around five hours – by comparison, other routes to Paphos from Dublin require changing aircraft in London or Manchester for a total travel time of up to 12 hours.

Cyprus is awash with well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins, including some stunning Roman mosaics just outside Paphos, but it’s also one of the few places where you can go skiing and hit the beach in the same day. The nearly 2-kilometre-high Mount Olympus Ski Resort in the Troodos Mountains is open from January to March, just a couple of hours from golden beaches where the sea temperature is 18°C on average in January.

Dublin to Santander, Spain, with Ryanair

Twice weekly flights now extended all year round

Santander could provide you with an amazingly cheap January getaway – we found direct return flights to the Spanish city from just €27 with Ryanair as part of their new year-round service. Situated on the Mediterranean coast, Santander is still a pleasant 11°C on average in January, and the city has plenty of cultural hotspots to explore.

The fancy modernist building Centro Botín juts directly out above the sea on the city’s waterfront and hosts contemporary art exhibitions from international artists, while the Cantabria Prehistory and Archaeology Museum houses exhibits on the local caves, where some of the oldest cave paintings in the world have been discovered – and its interactive displays are great for kids.

Where to go on holiday in December

The weather’s getting colder and the days are getting shorter – so it’s time to get away. Flee the freezing weather with a beach holiday in the Maldives or Canary Islands, party the year away in Edinburgh or Berlin – or simply enjoy the snow in Oslo.
