There are no direct flights from Dublin to Adelaide, Australia, but Qantas, Etihad and Virgin Australia all have connecting flights.

Terminal Information – Departing
If you are on a Qantas, Etihad or Virgin Australia flight you will be departing from Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport (Terminal 2 is for American airlines). Terminal 1 is a large terminal, with most facilities you could ask for – there are plenty of places to eat that are family friendly, work oriented businesses lounges and, obviously, free Wifi.
Once you arrive, you can eat in Upper Crust, Angel’s Share or in McDonalds. Alternatively, wait until you’re on the other side to grab a tasty salad from Marquette, or a big whopper from Burger King.
There’s also plenty of chocolate treats in duty free (don’t tell the kids). Mum and dad might prefer the Sunglass Hut, Pandora or Tom Ford in terminal 1 – there are plenty of shopping opportunities here!
The lounge costs €20 to access for 3 hours, and this buys you alcoholic beverages, hot drinks, free internet access, and small snacks.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Adelaide’s Airport is clean easy and efficient. Bags usually arrive on time and the customs staff know how to make the process go smoothly. There is free Wifi connectivity in Adelaide Airport, and cafes on arrival.
You can get to Adelaide from Adelaide Airport by taxi, train, bus or shuttle bus.
There are always taxis outside. It costs around $25 (€16)to get to the city centre, and takes just 15 minutes in good traffic. A $2 (€1.30)charge is added on exiting the airport. If you’d like to save money transfers cost less – around $15, and you can organize these at the booths inside Adelaide Airport.
The train is one of the easiest ways to get to Adelaide. The J1X train from the airport to Adelaide runs twice an hour, between 5am and 12pm. The bus is another affordable option, connecting Adelaide to West Beach and Glenelg. Whether you’re on the bus or a the train, a Metrocard will help you easily travel around Adelaide. This can be purchased at the airport.
Practical Information
Irish citizens get a free 90 day tourist visa for Australia, but if you want to stay beyond that you have to apply for the Working Holiday Visa.
Australia use the Australian dollar. At the time of writing, 1 Australian Dollar is equal to 65 Cents. Australians do not use copper coins – instead, they have 10c, 20c, 50c and $1 coins. Australia have $5, $10, $20 and $50 bank notes. Fun Fact: this currency is also waterproof!

What you need to know about Adelaide
Although Australia is typically very expensive, Adelaide is one of the smaller cities, and it’s much cheaper than Dublin. Meals out look expensive (you read $20 on the menu and it looks a lot!), but the conversion means you may only be spending €13. Alcohol is expensive here, whether you buy it in the shops or at a bar. A beer will cost around €5 – the same as in Dublin. Luckily, Adelaide’s transport is also slightly cheaper. Travel on public transport to avoid extortionate taxi fares though!
Victoria is the next state to South Australia, and this is where you can see the Great Ocean Road – the 12 Apostles are absolutely breathtaking. Watch out for the kangaroos on the road though.
