A perfect base from which to explore
Set on a prime location opposite Walhalla's rotunda, the Star Hotel is a delightful, cozy, comforable place from which to explore the town and learn about its history. Your hosts will be delighted to fill you in on all sorts of historical details. (At least, the human ones will. The canine ones are rather too busy demanding affection.) Meals are excellent, and the living room on the ground floor is so inviting that it can be a challenge to pull yourself away to explore the town, either by day or by night.
The hotel is in the process of installing a lift to allow stair-free access to the upper floor. The rooms are very generously sized with large ensuite, and with excellent views out over the street and rotunda. Breakfast was a selections of cereals, juices, breads and pastries as well as hot drinks. Dinner is not served every night, but for those nights it is on offer, it is from a limited menu of main course and dessert.

perfect
Very quaint hotel smack dab in the center of whats left of the town. The room was perfect for one night with a balcony overlooking the gazebo. The proprietor was excellent at providing us history and suggestions for our next leg.

Great getaway in stunning surroundings
We really enjoyed our overnight stay. The room was nice and bed comfortable.
I liked that there was a coffee / tea station outside our room.
Also drinks were available on an honesty system.
I loved the balcony overlooking the town. We sat there with a glass of wine.
Dinner and breakfast were good.

Modern comfort in a period style
Can’t over praise this little gem. Modern comfort in a beautiful reconstruction of the original hotel building. Michael and the team were hospitality itself and we felt totally at home in their snug lounge chatting with him and the other guests. Do have dinner there ( there isn’t really anywhere else) it’s excellent! Special mention to Rupert, Tilly and Otte the friendliest, best behaved and. Handsomest golden retrievers you are ever likely to meet.

Abysmal and Overrated
Terribly disappointed. To begin with, Walhalla is one of the most beautiful places in Victoria. Walhalla's Star Hotel is overrated. Reading the 5 star reviews in bewildering. When we arrived, we felt that we were intruding. There was no warm welcome whatsoever. Infact there was little conversation at all. The rehearsed monologue when we were shown to our room was pitiful. The room was sparse and stuffy. The bathroom was dated with a shower curtain that was too long. Having a shower felt as though your were being subjected to a hail of bullets due to the shower head. Dinner was bland and served up with contempt. There was no dress code for the waiters. They couldn't have cared less about presentation. Breakfast was a basic continental which included stale croissants and coffee which was lukewarm. I could go on but this establishment has taken up enough of my time. Be aware that whilst dinner and breakfast is included in the tariff, it is below par. We will return to Walhalla but not to this Hotel! In summary, the impression we got with this Hotel is "take it or leave it." Never again!

This same review was posted on google under the title "Terribly Disappointed" a week ago. For someone who claims that "I could go on but this establishment has taken enough of my time." it is amusing that they have spent more time to re-post their negative review. Perhaps they did not get the reply they wanted. In 27 years of operating this hotel, I can confidently say that 99.99% of guests are wonderful, friendly, engaging and positive. However there are some who are just a little odd and clearly have needs well beyond anything we can provide. We have a short list of guests who we would be happy to never see again at the hotel, we have just added another one. Here is the reply to the same google review of a week ago FYI:

While you have obviously taken a dislike to the hotel, the overwhelming majority of our reviews are, as you noted, extremely favourable and positive. Perhaps it's not the hotel and our service here that's the issue we would suggest. We look forward to you returning to Walhalla and staying elsewhere.
