Different enough to be well worth the trip.

This place is a gem in a city full of fascinating architecture and cultural distinctions. There is even a thick book on Newfoundland English! The building itself could use some exterior work but inside it is gorgeous and very well kept as a historical site of just over 100 years. The wood working, paintings, and decor are all in keeping with the style of building and its time of construction. The hostess ,Mary , is a Newfoundland treasure who literally does everything all on her own, including cooking fantastic breakfasts of continental quality. ! Really - she is the sole and soulful staff member !!! If you need help taking heavy bags upstairs you will need to ask ahead of time. The location is fine if you have a car or do not mind walking and bussing. The fact that King Charles stayed there when he was yet a prince is a great bonus that includes anecdotes. Off season rates are good but the whales and icebergs show up in late May or June. Go to Quiddy Widdy one day of your stay - its part of St Johns and worth it. Also check out Cape Spear - its only about a 20 naming drive from the city and will give you a sense of the coastline. if you want fast paced Celtic Newfoundland style music it seems to start around 9:30 downtown St John's. The earlier music in the pubs tends to be folk or country. The pubs are all in the same area which makes it easy to get around to more than one. There are also a gazillion great shops of all kinds downtown close by the pub quarter. The Anglican Cathedral is one of the best in North America and rivals Europe's. Newfoundlanders are a lot of fun and tend to be helpful to travelers. Watch the Moose on the highways - give them a wide slow birth- they say there are more of them than there are people and like most Newfoundlanders they were imports!

Pervasive smell of mothballs in our room, on the 3rd floor up a narrow staircase, (as there is only one other set of occupants were there no bedrooms lower down?),
Most of the property has no A/C so very hot and stuffy. Our room did have A/C but a very noisy unit out of the window. Pillow cases were creased and looked like they had been slept on, black hair in the sink.
Breakfast was awful. Had to be at a fixed time chosen the night before (even though there was only one other set of guests). No choice just whatever strange food was made that morning. Just wanted a normal breakfast we are not fussy. Managed to find a great bakery round the corner where we ate breakfast. Overall very shabby- peeling paint, scratched woodwork and cracked plaster.
It is massively overpriced for the experience.
Nice art, books, and tranquil reception rooms.
I feel like I want to refund when I look at where I could have stayed for half the price.

The B&B is a very impressive Mansion. The interior exemplifies what a rich house was like in the early 1900’s. The exterior was becoming decrepit and needed much maintenance.
Mary, the lone custodian, tries very hard to keep guests happy. She served us well as only 2 rooms were occupied. She would not be able to do so if the B&B is fully occupied.

Mary was great and made you feel right at home! Breakfast was really delicious and such a nice, personal way to start the day. The bed is very comfortable and the location to downtown was perfect. I’d highly recommend staying at the Ryan Mansion any time of year! Thank you, Mary!
