More shabby than chic!
A golden house sitting on a hill, over looking the town. In reality, the golden house needs a lick of paint, inside and out. The house is hidden by trees and cannot be seen as the prominent house as shown in the photos. On entering the dark hallway, we were met by a lady and briefly shown around. We were taken to our room and I am afraid I was not impressed. The same furniture as shown online but it simply did not have the same appeal. It had a tired feeling to it. The same feeling was felt around the pool. I got the feeling it has not been decorated for many years. I love antiques, especially French Brocante antiques. This is what drew me to this house, after seeing it on Instagram and looking at the website. I love the shabby chic look but sadly this was more shabby than chic. The bed was not very comfortable, sinking in the middle and the pillows were lumpy and hot. Do not expect croissants or bread, or any welcome whatsoever. In most accommodations I have stayed in France, we have been welcomed with a drink with the host, a bottle of wine in the fridge or some fresh bread. Here you will not get anything. In fact It was not until I asked the lady who met us at the house if she was the owner that she confirmed she was. The house sits by the River Calavon, which brought many mosquitos. The nights were hot and the room did not have air conditioning, We therefore had to sleep with the windows open with shutters closed. At the end of the week, I counted 36 mosquito bites! The house also sits alongside the busy Quai de la Liberte, with a constant flow of traffic from early morning too early evening.
Apt itself is a very quite town, with not much life at all. There are not many shops, with only a few being open the several times we visited the town. There are a few average restaurants which tend to shut early. If I visit Provence again I would chose to stay in Lourmarin, Bonnieux or Menerbes. These are much prettier towns.

Beautiful view of Apt from this boutique hotel.
I stayed in a lovely 1 bedroom contemporary unit. Beautifully decorated. The lush curtains dressing the windows, opens to a magical, serene view of the village and below is the garden and the swimming pool beautiful setting. Will definitely come back.

Quilts, silks, antiques and linens....decorating with a designer's flair!
We loved LaMadone! Having travelled to the region often my husband and I thought it would be fun to be in a larger, working town like Apt for a change. Though the entrance into LaMadone is rather discreet, once inside, the building provided us with the stately elegant feel of a Country Mas, with its gorgeous cement pool and lovely outdoor area. At the same time it's easy downtown location offered up the variety of the interesting old town of Apt, with its array of café's coming into town and large Saturday market. Lots of great photo ops in town too!
Most importantly, our hosts Nathalie and Jean-Bernard are interesting and adorable people and though they were busy with their Antique Shop in Lourmarin (I'm sorry not to have seen it) and a young growing family, they made time to offer cocktails one evening where we met other guests (there are four apartments in LaMadone) and chatted. We had particularly good laughs with our hosts though, and that good feeling coloured the rest of our stay in Apt. We highly recommend LaMadonne.
Parking is available on the street (narrow) or down below at the river, steps away from the building. The access to the swimming pool at first is a bit of a surprise, through the lower bowels of the building and wandering through the fresh scent of the ancient laundry room, but it only adds to the authentic feel of the place. Charming accommodation!

Heaven
La Madone to me is heaven on earth! My husband and I stayed in the Renaissance and it truly felt like HOME. Every corner held my heart even if it was space. I LOVED every moments spent within the wall. It was clean, comfortable and easy to walk to town, shops and restaurants. You must visit their Antique shop too! Jean Bernard & Nathalie are professionals and are special & helpful. They both have an amazing eye for magic~
