Dreamily beautiful guesthouse with a lovely owner
Fate would have it that we ended up there - we had actually booked accommodation in Arcachon, but because of the fires, we could not go there. This is the only way we found this dreamily beautiful place in Cognac!
The property with its wonderfully maintained garden, the refreshing pool, and the very tastefully furnished rooms is one thing - the other is the very loving and interested care provided by the owner, Patricia. She adapts to every guest individually - for example, we were allowed to keep the hearty breakfast for our teenagers in the refrigerator for later every day, which is otherwise never possible in hotels. Patricia recommended brilliant restaurants in and around Cognac - and also a few great beaches on the coast where we could mingle with locals and ate delicious food.
The "Logis des Tourelles" is a special place. Those who are looking for anonymity might prefer to go to a hotel. Those who would like to know more about the country and its people, who would like to show respect to this beautiful place and its owner, and who might like to leave as a friend, will be very happy here.
Many thanks, dear Patricia ☀️

For this to happen, mutual trust and respect are essential. Regarding this particular stay, shared by several travellers from the same group, our account of events differs significantly from the one presented here, particularly regarding the origin and handling of the cancellation request. We do not wish to go into detail publicly, but remain available to anyone who would like to know more before booking.
We continue to warmly welcome all our guests, in the spirit of respect that has always defined our home.

Unprofessional host, worst hotel experience
We had originally booked accommodation for 18–21 July through Hotels.com. Since we happened to be in the area earlier than planned, we contacted the property and booked an additional stay from 10–12 July.
When we arrived, we realised there was no air conditioning. As this had been an important requirement for us, we asked whether it would be possible to cancel our upcoming reservation. The owner declined and referred to the booking conditions. Although disappointed, we accepted her decision and moved on.
The following day, everything changed. The owner approached us and unexpectedly suggested that we should cancel the second reservation after all. She explained that she valued her reputation highly and did not want guests staying there if they were unlikely to enjoy the experience. She assured us that she would cooperate with the cancellation.
When we checked out, she told us she would handle the matter with Hotels.com. Shortly after we left, she called again to explain that Hotels.com needed us to submit the cancellation request ourselves, but she reassured us that she would approve it from her side. Trusting what she told us, we booked alternative accommodation for the same dates.
Unfortunately, that was when the real problems started.
Instead of confirming the cancellation as promised, the owner suddenly refused to cooperate. Over the following days, the explanations changed repeatedly. At one point she claimed we had damaged the room, but never produced any evidence despite requests from Hotels.com. Later she even stated that we had never stayed at the property at all, something that was easily disproved by reservation records, payment documentation and photographs from our stay.
She also accused us of threatening her because we informed her that, unless the agreed cancellation was honoured, we intended to use the reservation we had already paid for. We considered that a perfectly reasonable statement rather than any form of threat.
Communication quickly became impossible after she blocked our phone number, leaving Hotels.com as the only way to reach her.
Resolving the situation required countless conversations with Hotels.com over the course of a week. We spent roughly fifteen hours on the phone before the case finally reached senior management. It was only after the evidence had been reviewed at that level that our refund was approved. Several representatives expressed surprise at the way the situation had been handled.
Looking back, what troubled us most was the sequence of events. The owner encouraged us to cancel, assured us the cancellation would be accepted, led us to arrange different accommodation, then refused both the cancellation and the refund while making a series of accusations that could not be substantiated.
Apart from the refund dispute, we also found the overall atmosphere uncomfortable. The owner shared personal information about other guests, appeared unusually interested in where we were going and what we were doing, and spent well over an hour explaining how we should behave because we were “guests in her home.” We had booked accommodation through Hotels.com and expected a professional hospitality experience, not to feel as though we were being personally supervised.
We do not normally write negative reviews, but this experience was too significant to ignore. The property itself is not the main reason for this review. It is the owner’s conduct throughout the entire process that made what should have been a simple hotel stay unnecessarily stressful.
We appreciate that Hotels.com ultimately investigated the case thoroughly and reached what we believe was the correct outcome. Had they not done so, we are not convinced we would ever have received the refund that had originally been promised.
Based on our experience, we would not feel comfortable recommending this property to other travellers.
