Perfect View and Welcoming

The very pretty view and warm Welcoming more than compensate for the aging side. Large room with "vintage" decoration and clean. Very quiet at night.
Hearty breakfast (no salt) with panoramic views.
I'll be right back.

L'Auberge Bates

Essentially Abandoned. I was the only guest when I checked in. Room had a black mirrored ceiling. Dog turd in the breakfast room. Someone else checked into the room next to mine about 9 that night and I could hear them speaking at normal conversational volume. The restaurant was closed, I had to drive into the village for dinner. Breakfast was an adequate standard petit dejeuner. The elderly owner was very friendly, but she was there all by herself and the experience was beyond creepy.

Superb view

This hotel is ideally located, offering stunning views of Vezelay. From the bedroom or dining room, the Vezelay Basilica, right across the street, allows you to appreciate the place.
The hotel would ask for a little youth, but the kindness of the boss more than compensates. The French breakfast is perfect.

Sleeper Gem Near Vezelay

Finally, I can say I had great luck in reserving 3 rooms for our party of 2 fathers and 2 daughters at this hotel. Although the rooms were very large and quite well appointed, it was the restaurant and owners that won the day for us. The food is now prepared by the owner's nephew and evidently, he had a good teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Schori have been running this place for many years but still are on top of everything. Mrs. Schori acts as the Maitre D' and Mr. Schori hangs out in his office just upstairs from the restaurant. The rooms are in an annex.
The menu is filled with old time favorites: terrine maison, ris de veau, carre d'agneau and saumon a l'estragon. All were excellent and arrived at the table right off the grill.
The rooms are a bargain at 135 euros (June 2018). My co-father had to fax the US several times and Mr. Schori could not have been nicer in helping us accomplish his faxing but also in helping translate part of the communications.
The highlight of the evening was the most perfect Epoisses I ever ate. It was runny but not too sharp.
This hotel-restaurant is a real find considering I knew nothing about it except it was close to Vezelay. I highly recommend it.

A Wonderful Stay

We had to abandon our boat on the Nivernais Canal and picked this hotel by random from Michelin Guides and taxied to a wonderful stay. Because Madame and I could not speak with French or English, she called her charming daughter, Caroline, who could speak English to be there when we arrived. We found the hospitality gracious, the rooms large and lovely, and the food excellent. Our time there was restful, the countryside and views wonderful.
