Pilgrimage to Ise and a relaxing stay at a remote island hot spring
I have been to Mie Prefecture several times in the past, but I always stayed in Toba or Osatsu, so this was my first time going all the way to Shima.
The inn I chose for this trip was "Haifu", a hotel on the remote island of Wataranojima, where all rooms have an open-air bath with an ocean view.
Actually, this "Haifu" was a hotel that I had been very interested in when I was looking at other accommodations when I stayed in Mie Prefecture in the past.
However, I thought it was a bit far to go to Shima, so I didn't make a reservation, so I chose it as my accommodation this time.
It was such a long-awaited "Haifu", and in the end, staying there was a great decision!
First, when we arrived at the parking lot of the inn, we were guided to the nearby pier, where we boarded a private ferry to head to the inn on the remote island across the river.
At this point, there was a sense of excitement that I didn't get at other inns, and my children were very happy.
The whole facility was very clean, and there is a large public bath between the inn and its sister inn, Fukujuso, next door. The corridor connecting the two was very tasteful, and there was a beautiful garden, so it had a great atmosphere.
This time we stayed in a 12.5 tatami room, which was spacious, very clean, and very comfortable.
We could see the ocean from our room, and there was a large private open-air bath on the balcony of our room. It was great to be able to enjoy the open-air hot spring bath while looking at the ocean whenever we wanted, and we took a bath both at night and in the morning.
The meals were served in the restaurant, and dinner was a course meal, but the sashimi, soup, fish dishes, and meat dishes were all very delicious, and the children were very happy to eat.
With this course, we had a plan to prepare a private room for dinner and breakfast, so it was very nice that the children could play there if they got bored.
This time we only stayed one night, so we checked out the next day, but next time we would like to stay for a few days and explore the island.
Thank you for a wonderful time.

Very Nice Japanese Hotel
It is about a 15 minute drive from Ugata station to the boat launch, then a 5 minute boat ride to the hotel. The hotel has a bus from the station but if you come by taxi then you just need to call ahead and the boat will come for you. Leaving the island was also flexible, we told them what time we wanted to leave (off the bus schedule) and they arranged the boat and had a taxi waiting for us. The taxi was 3500 JPY to get to the station.
The dinner was excellent, such good food. The breakfast was also really nice (had the Japanese style). The food service is quite flexible such as for allergy for other requests. I do not like shrimp, crab, and lobster so this was changed for something else in my dinners and breakfasts. I suggest to ask in advance.
Room was OK, but it smelled a bit like smoking inside. We were told that there are no designated non-smoking rooms, so I assume all rooms have a bit of a smoked smell. Room was clean though and the balcony bath was very nice with a seaside view. The main onsen was also nice. Watakano island is quite small. There is a small beach about 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel with some facilities and rental stuff.
I would suggest to the hotel to make non-smoking rooms. It will improve the quality for the stay for many of your guests.
