Older hotel but good value.

We had a room on the 4th floor. Although it was called a "double" the bed was more like a queen or king size. Our room featured a sitting area with a small couch, 2 windows that looked out over the city, an outdoor balcony, and mini-refrigerator. We enjoyed our view.
The hotel is older and many of the furnishings are worn and outdated. The couch in our room was quite worn but the bed and nightstands were decent. The stairways have marble stairs and high ceilings. The ownership would do well to provide more maintenance and upgrades to their property.
Housekeeping emptied the trash daily and provided linens/towel exchange every 2-3 days. Although this hotel saw it's prime many years ago, the workers were very dedicated and pleasant. The doorman was happy to run our heavy luggage up to the 4th floor for us. We always felt safe there and were pleased to see that the front desk clerk was often monitoring numerous security cameras placed around the property. The reception staff and bellmen were all courteous and helpful!
There is no elevator so be prepared for a bit of exercise whenever arriving back to the hotel. The amenities were quite basic (tiny bars of soap, small packets of shampoo, limited towels, no washcloths). The hot water was sporadic and unpredictable.
The hotel is just across the street from a large market (less than 5 minute walk) where one can buy all kinds of fruits, vegetables, and more. It was camouflaged behind a drab facade, but indoors were numerous booths of vendors. Also, the State Department Store is about a 20 minute walk away.
We did not eat any meals at the hotel's restaurant so cannot comment on what was offered there. The hotel offered free wifi in the room that was quite decent. Many times, we smelled cigarette smoke as we were walking in from the lobby up to our floor. It was often the strongest around the 2nd floor. It would be nice if in the future all smoking would be outdoors.

Wonderful week

I recently stayed at the Evergreen Hotel with a group of travelers. Our one-week stay was very good. This is certainly not a 4 or 5 star hotel, however, for the price we paid, it was excellent. The staff was very attentive and helpful.

Stayed here for a week

I stayed at the Evergreen Hotel for a week in the spring of 2016. Was it the Ritz? No, certainly not. If you're looking for a high end hotel, just expect that this isn't it. Things are rather worn and our room smelled of smoke, albeit not overwhelmingly. There was commotion in the hallways some nights and, since our room was at the front of the hotel, you could hear the trains off and on throughout the night.
That having been said, we were pleased with the attentiveness of the staff to our needs. The beds were comfortable and we had new pillow cases and new towels. There was a mini-fridge in our room and the radiators kept us comfortably warm on cool evenings. The shower worked marvelously, there was no lack of hot water and excellent water pressure. We were supplied with hand soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and a packable roll of TP for excursions (you'll be glad of that). You can walk to the supermarket or the State Department Store and the Black Market is a straight shot down the street.
There's no question that the hotel has passed its heyday, but I still found it passable and sufficient for my needs. The furniture could certainly use some updating as it's worn and, in some cases, badly stained. I'm sure there are better places in town, but I have no doubt that there are many far worse.
Would I stay here again? Yes, I would. Are there some things that could be done to bump this property up by a star or two? Without a doubt.
In a nutshell, I'd say the Evergreen Hotel is clean and friendly, but is long overdue for an overhaul of its furnishings. I've stayed at a lot of places in a lot of countries, so my experience wouldn't warrant giving it a one star rating. A two-and-a-half to three star seems about right.

I am sorry I stayed here.

The Hotel manageress was unco-operative, the rooms are worn and smelly from smokers and booze. There were prostitutes coming and going at all hours. The restaurant was not ever opened and they did not supply any breakfast....not even if you paid for it. Nothing. The place was lifeless! For what they offered it was very expensive and I hated it and will never go near it again!

Avoid at all costs

The only good thing about this place - close to the railway station - you can hear the trains all night, unless you're in a room next to the adjoining karaoke bar, which is many times worse than the trains! No lift, and there are a lot of stairs to the 4th floor. Breakfast was very poor. The restaurant, advertised open until 10pm was closed before 9pm, so pot noodles from a local supermarket. Not very clean, Basic furnishings, but large rooms. Booked out after one night.
