Small homely hostel, good location

7 rooms in this hostel run by Raoul and his mother. Excellent location near lots of theatres and the royal palace. Lovely cage lift from lobby up to 6th floor where hostel was. Raoul lent us some English guidebooks. His mum did not speak English but we still managed to communicate and she was helpful likewise. Basic clean rooms, very safe, and good for the price in good location.

The bargain in the center of Madrid

The people working here are just great, there is really a feeling of being with the family (in the finest sense of the word). And the prices here are just laughable. I paid 30 Euro per night for the room with all the facilities inside, and the hostel is just two minutes of a slow walk from Gran Via. It is, in fact, very well located, because there are no clubs or bars working at night under the hostel windows, and you don't have to listen to revelling madrileños until 5 a.m., which is the normal story if you stay in the center of Madrid. So three main ingredients are present: the location, the price and the nice hosts. But the hostel has its problems too.
First and foremost, the problem is a smell. I suppose that it is allowed to smoke in the hostel (I have never seen it, it is only a theory) and, as a countermeasure, they use an odorant with a smell so pervasive and intense, that it feels like bumping into a sweet-scented wall when you enter the hostel, and you are never quite sure whether you are free from that scent all the day long after leaving.
The second problem is closely connected with the first and that is towels. They are old and, apparently, they catch the smell, which is everywhere, so, in fact, you don't feel their touch as very refreshing.
Smell aside, the facilities work reasonably well, though Wi-Fi functions better in the rooms, which are closer to the staff's room: there is no signal in the room 8 (two single beds of a poor quality), where I had been initially, and in the room 3 (one double bed, quite a good one) the signal was good enough to provide a Skype-session with video and to download pages. In the public area there is a microwave oven (free use at any time) and a machine, selling coffee and tea for 1 euro per cup.
Combining it all: the hostel is a bargain considering the price and the location, but with its shortcomings. If they remove that dashed sweet smell it will be the real hit.

Not what we expected.

Beware the photos!
This is someone's apartment, they are renting out the rooms, they have stuck bathrooms into the rooms, and that's it. They are very nice people, the place is secure, rooms are cleaned daily, TV and internet. But you better be comfortable if travelling with others, as the bathroom IN the room is not very private, the walls don't go all the way to the ceiling so everything is audible to your roommate. Also it just felt a bit weird that we were in someone's home.
Good location though.
