Excellent Hostel in the heart of Madrid
Due to the circumstances of the power blackout I had to stay here and I must confess that it was quite a success and I will take it into account for later trips when I must stay in Madrid.
Very new and comfortable facilities and super professional and charming staff who were very attentive and efficient make this property a 100% recommended place

Decent, Well-Located Budget Accommodation, PLEASE READ My Shower Comments
As a solo traveler who spent little time in my room, it suited my need. The hotel is located a short walk from Atocha Station, with a frequent, cheap airport train connection, buses, high-speed trains, etc. It was also within about a 20-minute walk to most major attractions. The Prado Museum and Retiro Park were a few blocks away. There were countless cafes, fast food options and several grocery stores nearby. The price was fair, not cheap, not expensive, but the location was the best part.
You enter through an open-air hallway, you get buzzed in through a gate that leads into a small courtyard and then a small lobby. I came and went at all hours and there was always someone there to let me in or greet me, often buzzing me in before I even rang the bell. They were all friendly and spoke good to adequate English. My room was very small, spartanly-furnished with a single bed, nightstand and lamp, TV on the wall, a folding chair and a large, hinged shelf that could drop down. Wifi worked well. There was a radiator and AC unit but I found no way to control them and they never ran. There was very little room to move. The room was clean, I was provided two towels and while I requested no service during my three-night stay, I had to ask the front desk for more soap and toilet paper as little was provided. There was also a small bottle of shampoo and body wash. The room was pretty clean.
The bathroom was small but the biggest downside was the shower. It was tiny and had a hand-held nozzle that only would stay in place WHEN the water was running. If you bumped into the faucet, lowering the pressure, it would fall from the holder and likely hit you on the head, fall to the ground and require you to get out of the shower to pick it up. It was nearly impossible to avoid doing so. There was no soap dish, which was more troublesome. I'm 5'11, 175 lbs (80 cm, 80 kg) and if I was any bigger, I simply wouldn't have been able to wash myself in the shower. Keep that in mind when booking a room.
As a solo budget traveler, if the price was right, I'd stay again.

Perfectly located budget hotel
The main asset of Hostal San Blas is its location: not more than 300 m from the Atocha railway station and some 500 m from the Museo del Prado. The price (€ 48 per night for a single room) is reasonable enough, compared to other hotels in this area. My room was quite small, but it had everything necessary (TV, WC, shower, hair dryer). All receptionists were very friendly and helpful, they all spoke good English. Though there are no breakfast facilities, this problem could be easily resolved: there are several breakfast restaurants in this area (my personal choice was Casa Luciano). I would recommend this place to tourists interested in sightseeing.

Great Location
Friendly staff, comfortable rooms and a great location make Hostal San Blas a great place to stay in Madrid. A 10 minute walk to the Prada and botanic gardens plus loads of bars and restaurants close by. It was also a 10 minute walk to the Airport Express bus which made getting to the airport really easy.

Fantastic value
I stayed in Hostal San Blas for just one night, but I had a good experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to spend a few nights in Madrid.
Like other guests have noted the rooms are quite small, but mine at least was quiet, clean as a whistle and had everything I needed. In fact, I even had enough space for my morning push-up routine! Also, you're in Madrid, a city with a vibrant social life, so you shouldn't be spending too much time in your hotel room anyway.
The hostal is perfectly situated close to a subway station, the main railway station, important tourist destinations like the Reina Sofia museum or the Retiro park, and the vibrant neighborhood of Lavapies. So make no mistake, this is as good as you'll find location-wise.
In terms of staff, there's a receptionist 24/7, if you don't see him/her just knock on the window. When I stayed there the receptionist was friendly and helped me when I had trouble finding my room.
