Very honest and correct

I have been twice (2016 and 2024) to the Hotel L'Ermitage. I appreciated the Welcoming and the quality of the facilities. The very positive opinion I am sending out today is for another reason. Via Booking.com, I had booked one night for four people. Due to the injury of one of my teammates, I could not honor my reservation. The hotel officials were of a great correction. They paid us back in full.

Average for a 2*

A charming historic premises with lovely owners that has very dated furniture and fittings and many signs that the building could benefit from some attention. That said, it was comfortable enough and clean. Breakfast had a limited "continental" buffet reflective of the overall standard

Historical charm vs rundown

Spent a night in room 11. I mention the room nbr as it could be that other rooms are in better condition. Difficult to say: nice and charming owners, very nice BFast with well thought anti Covid19 food table.... but.... historical charm should not means rundown bed , mattress and pillow. Old charm can't justify unglued and dirty plastic floor lining, dirty bathroom with pre-silicon-era joints cracked and full of dirt. Old charm can't excuse a symbolic handrail on the shaking balcony. For a not so low price per night, this is truly selling not maintained facility for "Old Charm".

Policies over humans

We booked a week in advance for a trip during the coronavirus outbreak before it was widely understood to be as bad as it is (Feb 2020). We wrote to cancel just 5 days later, noting we were cancelling the whole trip because of travel advisory (they are next to open border with Italy and by then our workplaces were forbidding international travel). They refused to refund our deposit (of one night) and THEN after we protested and even said we would accept vouchers for future trip when all this was over... they went and billed our credit card for the remaining two nights of the reservation that we had cancelled. They SAID it was because we booked when we knew about the virus and so it is on us. But the sense of urgency was changing daily, and so was info about contagion; it still is. They did offer a voucher but it was only good through THIS April; that is -- right now: in the middle of the covid crisis when whole countries are on lockdown. A year long voucher would have been acceptable, a good enough gesture. But, no. We totally understand that it is a Tough time to be in the hospitality business! But it is not a smart business decision and certainly not a human one to be so inhospitable and unaccommodating, esp in a crisis. Also - the emails in response to our protests are all simply strict repetitions of the policy. There is no, "we are sorry," or "we wish we could help". No - " I hope you and your family are OK in this crisis." Nothing human, and therefore I am posting this. I do hope they and their employees are OK but since nothing human has passed between us I could not say so.

Spending quality time in the Val d'Herence

As part of our Tour de Suisse with friends we spent two nights at this epic old establishment in the centre of Evolene. The hotel has been in the same family for four generations and still features some of the original memorabilia. It oozes the atmosphere of the 20th century and its owners do everything to make guests feel welcome. Admittedly there are more modern accommodation facilities, but they do not breathe the same charm as some of the old established and well kept places. Yes the floors are creaking, and the furniture reflect the maturity of the hotel, but everything is clean and well maintained. Rooms have a small balcony that allows guests to experience the mature trees on the section and having a look around the neighbourhood.
We enjoyed the generous breakfast featuring, several breads, cheeses, joghurt, boiled eggs, sweet treats and fresh coffee and fresh fruit which set us up for the rest of the day.
Great value for money and close to shops and restaurants, as well as many of the typical wooden houses adorned with flower baskets.
