Could do Better

I stayed at the Nana Hotel for just one evening in December 25. I wanted to enjoy New Year in Bangkok without the struggle to get home relying on public transport. It’s not the first time I have stayed at this hotel. The first time was 20 years ago in fact. So, I have my old memory of this hotel, and I was so looking forward to being back and curious to see any changes.
Overall, I was sadly disappointed with my stay at the Nana Hotel. I so wanted to love my stay at this long-standing Bangkok hotel with a good history. It is somewhat of a landmark for many people.
The hotel is at the very start of Soi 4 Nana. This area of the city is famous for its nightlife and a walk along Soi 4 certainly makes it pretty clear the nature of the nightlife in this area of Bangkok There is the huge adult entertainment area called Nana Plaza at the start of the soi (street) and this is right opposite the Nana Hotel. If you are in Bangkok looking to party and enjoy this particular kind of nightlife, it’s the perfect hotel to stay at. The walk from the nearest sky train station Nana to the hotel is only about 5 minutes. It’s a fantastic location if you seek the nightlife entertainment.
In terms of location the hotel is right amongst the busy bars and restaurants of this popular nightlife zone. Thankfully no need for a long taxi back to your hotel room, arguments over the fare and joining the masses stuck in Bangkok traffic. You walk out of your hotel, and you are immediately immersed in the excitement and energy of Nana Soi 4. And of course the rest of the downtown Sukhumvit area is all within walking distance.
The room was absolutely fine and a level of comfort that was more than satisfactory. Happy with the quality and what you would expect in terms of space, bathroom facilities and for the price paid I felt the room was adequate. I also slept well despite the location being in a busy area. The bed was huge and very comfortable and all-round the room was well designed, very clean and a feeling of luxury above the price point.
However, the room does not provide a kettle and complimentary tea and coffee. This I find extremely frustrating. I would expect the tea and coffee to be absolutely standard in any hotel regardless the price and what star rating it has. Now this was the cause of much of my frustration with my stay. I had to buy my own cup, tea and sugar and then to get boiling water I had travel down a few floors and along corridors to the pool area where the staff had a hot water facility. Then walk back the long distance holding my cup of boiling water. But the real frustration was when I went down to the restaurant and asked for a tiny amount of milk to pour into my cup of tea. I asked for just literally a tiny amount of milk, a thimble worth, a tablespoon of milk. The staff refused to give the milk for one cup of tea. I didn’t ask for a whole cup of milk, just dab of milk to turn my tea from black to brown. I could not believe they refused me this. There are fridge’s packed with litres and litres of milk right there and yet they could not spare a spoonful for my tea. This I found truly bizarre. I had to go in search of a local 7/11 selling milk and return. The whole hassle to get a cup, boiling water and then milk was not worth it. The lack of a kettle, cups and basic tea and coffee is odd and the staff refusal to give me milk is enough to put me off returning. But it’s the attitude of the staff and refusal top offer a tiny drop of milk that I really cant forgive.
The pool area is great and naturally a wonderful spot to swim, read, relax and grab some rest in the sun. The sky train passes close by which I actually love. It’s an inner-city hotel so expect to be surrounded by transport, building and city noise. You can have food delivered to the pool (but no milk) and the design and layout is quite attractive. There are more than enough loungers and despite the size of the hotel and it being high season I never saw the pool area too packed.
The dining room is huge with a buffet offering a good range of food options from western to Thai. It’s a closed off room with little natural day light. If you crave a sunlit rooftop view for your breakfast experience offering a glimpse of the exciting city beyond then this hotel is not for you. This is not a small boutique hotel and so it may not suit those looking for a cosy hotel experience. This hotel can feel a little corporate and may not convey the family holiday, honeymoon vibe that other smaller hotels can offer.
I really wanted to love this hotel and feel the nostalgia for being back 20 years later. But sadly, not to be.

The hotel has been well renovated so there was a bit of noise but our stay was very pleasant as usual at this hotel. Would highly recomend as budget hotel in a very good area.

The breakfast was mostly cold or tempid. I had fried eggs and bacon. I noted they brought out fresh fried eggs so when to get them only to find they were cold. The fried rice and fried noodles were at best warm. The toaster is slow andxtakes 2 goes. I saw a couple of older guys getting staff to open the butter containers. The top was stuck on very firmly. The tea and coffee were too strong. I tried to water them down but they were awful. The staff were efficient. I thought the breakfast was better on previous visits.
