One of the best hotels in the World

I stayed here for 4 nights with my family, for my Mothers 80th Birthday. This was booked a year before arrival, and yet they gave us 3 rooms that were a long way from one another and on different floors / it would have made life a little easier to be closer to one another.  With another heatwave on, at the beginning of the stay, My room was extremely hot - I did not sleep for a single minute on the first night, which was hard work the next day. - There is 'air con' in some communal areas, but none in the bedrooms. They gave me 2 fans, so that was nice. My parents room was a bit smaller than they'd hoped and their internal bathroom had no extractor fan, whereas my bathroom did have one. They gave my Mum a bottle of champagne. My brother and his family had a suite, which was great, although they did hear the electric front door (directly below it) whenever it opened and closed, which was a bit weird (they said). Despite zero sleep on the first night, my room was very good, and we all thought the beds were comfortable, and the rooms very nicely equipped.
The staff are exceptional here, especially in the bar and the restaurant. The Australian lady on reception (who just arrived one month ago) was very nice. The hotel and its large grounds have so much to do - A fantastic and impressive outdoor pool and indoor pool, spacious changing rooms at every turn - all kept in very good condition - I loved the shipping posters in the indoor pool. We played a little golf (they provide clubs), and there were 2 tennis courts, which we all played on. There is also croquet.
The Village Inn (same ownership as the hotel) is equally fantastic - outstanding food, ambience and staff. We had 2 dinners here.
There is a very nice, large lounge, where we and others played board games & cards. There are 2 large children's rooms upstairs on the first floor, kitted out with tons of great stuff - foosball, a pool table, video games, DVD's, more board games -We all loved the 'Big Breakers Room'! > This is the name of one of the children's rooms. My 3 nieces (14/ 12/ 10), and myself (49!), enjoyed time here.
We had one dinner in the smart, art deco, breakfast & dinner restaurant, 'The Trevilder' - I was worried this might be small portions at a large price, but it was fantastic - not small and very interesting 'fine dining' style food - a big hit with everyone/ a great experience. Again, the hard working staff, also aid to make it memorable. Breakfast is also awesome, very good scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast!
This is one of the most impressive hotels I've ever been to - A real, 'we've thought of everything', type place! My parents have been twice before this, and I certainly hope to return. The countryside and beaches on your doorstep are beautiful/ enormously dramatic > Devon/ the UK, at its finest. We did some great walks, and my brother and one daughter had a surfing lesson at Bantham beach.

Service that goes above and beyond

We’ve been visiting this hotel as a family since the 1990s, so we’ve seen it through many different eras.
The transformation from our last stay in 2023 was noticeable from the moment we arrived. The welcome was warm, early check-in seamless, and the overall standard of food, service and attention to detail felt significantly improved.
Several members of staff deserve particular mention. Louis and Oliver in the bar provided genuinely five-star service: warm, proactive and full of personality. The cocktail offering has improved enormously too, particularly the excellent champagne cocktail.
Mark was fantastic when our room became extremely warm during the heatwave, quickly sourcing us extra water, towels and a fan, all with a smile. And Caroline remains an institution, delivering the same wonderful restaurant service we’ve remembered for years.
It was also great to see the Rock Pool Bar properly operational again. The food throughout our stay was consistently excellent. Most importantly for us, the lunchtime crab sandwich on the terrace is firmly back to its former glory!
After feeling reluctant to return following our previous experience, we came away genuinely impressed. It felt like the hotel we remembered, but refreshed and improved.
Whilst some of the hotel does feel a bit tired in places, the family run charm and history remains at the heart. It's a fantastic experience.
A huge thank you to Louis, Oliver, Mark, Caroline and the wider team for making our stay so special.

Excellent Hotel with exceptional service. We will return!

This hotel has got old school charm with exceptional pools, amazing staff and views to die for. Slightly outdated rooms and a little tatty but they’ve spent the money where it matters and the staff are the best of any hotel I’ve stayed. Excellent hotel and location.
