At Gothenburg Landvetter airport you can rent a car from Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt. All of these offices are located within the car pakrs outside of the main terminal.
Petrol stations close at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
There is a petrol station right outside of the multi-story car park called ‘Ingo’. If this one is not available, there’s another gas station off of Flygplatsvägen, just after McDonalds.
Driving around at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport
The airport is located to the south east of the city of Gothenburg. The airport is completely separate from the city, however the Highway 40 easily connects you to Gothenburg. The E20 also makes it easy to move down the coast and explore other cities like Halmstad and Malmo.
Gothenburg is on the west coast of Sweden. If you’re looking to reach Stockholm, it’s a 4 hour drive. It’s generally recommended you fly, if you want to reach that side of the country.
The roads in Sweden are in good condition, however there are smaller country roads that are more difficult to drive on. When driving here in winter, prepare your car by using chains on the tires.
Popular destinations to drive to from Gothenburg Landvetter Airport
Gothenburg is popular for it’s café culture, universities and it’s proximity to the sea and small coastal villages.
There is a congestion charge to enter Gothenburg, unless you are in a foreign vehicle. On street parking is available in the city, and the peak rates for parking apply between 8am and 10pm at night. There is a park and ride service for those who stay outside of the city centre.
Follow the Flygplatsvägen out of the airport and merge onto route 27 to reach Gothenburg. Continue along this road for 40km, until you find exit 23. Continue onto Ullevigatan to reach the south of the centre of Gothenburg.
Vastra Folunda & the Coast
Vastra Folunda is one of the boroughs outside of Gothenburg, and it’s very popular with those who love the great outdoors.
Continue on Flygplatsvägen to exit the airport, and turn left onto route 27. Continue for 20km, then take exit 70, sign posted for Malmo. Continue on the E6 towards Malmo. At junction 66, follow the 158 for Gothenburg. From here the road leads you to the coastal south of Gothenburg. Head north to reach the port of Gothenburg, and head south to explore more of the towns.
Malmo is a city on the southern end of Sweden’s coast, opposite the city of Copenhagen in Denmark. Its known for it’s design, engineering and stylish young culture.
There are several places to park in Malmo, however many require a parking disc. The majority of on street parking and multi-story car parks do require that you pay. You can purchase a parking disk from kiosks around Sweden.
Continue on Flygplatsvägen to exit the airport, and turn left onto route 27. Continue for 20km, then take exit 70, sign posted for Malmo. Continue on the E6 towards Malmo. This is a 2 and a half hour journey, and you’ll be on the coastal road for around 285km, but the sights of Sweden’s coast are well worth it on sunny days.
