Petrol stations near Riyadh Airport

If you select a 'full to full' car rental agreement you will need to hand your car back with a full tank.

There's a gas station just off the Airport Road, less than five minutes drive to the south-east of the terminal.

Driving around Riyadh Airport

The Airport Road is a large dual carriageway. There are lots of large, busy roads in and around the city. If you don't know Riyadh very well we recommend choosing a car hire package that includes a sat-nav. Traffic can be a bit chaotic, and not everyone follows the rules of the road. Drive defensively and don't be tempted to break any laws yourself. Women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, so if you're a solo female traveller you won't be able to hire a car. Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road, which will take a bit of getting used to if you don't drive abroad very often.

Getting to your destination

Riyadh is in the centre of Saudi Arabia, quite far from the country's top tourist destinations. If you're planning on visiting the Eastern Province we recommend looking at flights to Dammam. Likewise if you want to visit the holy cities of Mecca or Medina we recommend flights to Jeddah.

Saudi Arabia's glittering capital is an oasis of shopping malls and high-end restaurants in the middle of the desert. Conservative and business-like attitudes prevail in the city, although residents do like to indulge in designer clothes and expensive cars.

It takes about half an hour to drive into downtown Riyadh from the airport. Driving in the city can be a bit chaotic. Don't be surprised to see people double or even triple parked on yellow lines. The often oppressive heat of the city means that most Riyadh residents drive everywhere. During rush hour there can be traffic jams, but on the plus side it means that most businesses, hotels and attractions have their own private parking lots.

Al Kharj

This historic city is known for its ancient water-wells and the King Abdul Aziz Palace and Mosque. A more contemporary attraction is the water-tower, which is topped by a very retro revolving restaurant.

It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive to Al Kharj from Riyadh Airport. Traffic is similar to Riyadh, with most places of interest offering car parking.
