Flights to Lyon

Arriving in Lyon is like stepping onto the set of a French film set in the 1930s. The ramshackle, tumbledown feel of this city does not signify that it is past its best, or that it is not cared for. Rather, it suggests an inner confidence; for Lyon is the food capital of France and a stunning location into the bargain.

Just two hours from Alpine ski resorts in one direction and the Mediterranean in the other, this city has captured the best of both worlds. Lyon has capitalised on its quirky charm and thrown in award winning Michelin-starred restaurants, hedonistic music festivals like the Nuits Sonores and undertaken significant restoration of its docks which now proudly boast cafes, shopping malls, trams, chic apartments, ultra cool galleries showing cutting edge works and the modern Le musée des Confluences that looks like a giant space ship.

But, all that can be easily replaced with walks through the UNESCO World Heritage old town with its swoon-inducing architecture like the Roman Basilique de Notre Dame de Fourvière, the 5th century Cathédrale St-Jean and the tower at Fourviere, a copy of the Eiffel where great views make for an idyllic sunset picnic.

Be mesmerised by the museums in Lyon from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, known as the Litlte Louvre, the moving former Gestapo headquarters – the Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation and the cinematic Musée Lumière.

In summer, swim outdoors in the one of the city’s beautiful lakes like the Piscine du Rhone; amble through the Parc de la Tete d’Or with a baguette and brie or saunter to a sommelier to taste fine French vintage wines. Grab your velo and take to the many cycle paths that snake through the city or stay on foot to explore Lyon’s secret, hidden alleyways where the revolutions and intrigues of war were plotted.

While most cities have something particular to offer, it would seem that lovely Lyon really does have it all.

Best Time to Visit

The stunning Rhone-Alpes regions of France gets both the chilly Alpine winds and the Mediterranean breeze. Winters are dry but not often snowy while summers are hot, particularly July and August. Spring and autumn are the lushest and mildest of months with, more often than not, pleasantly warm weather. January is the coldest month while August, the hottest, often sees locals pack up their homes and shops and head for their holidays.

Other reasons for visiting may be the lure of the Pastry World Cup in January; the Lyon International Fair in March, the Lyon-Charbonnières Car Rally in April or the Nuits Sonores all night music festival in May. Others may prefer the Theatre festival in June’ July’s Art in the Square, the September Pottery Festival or October’s Antiques Fair. Celebrations marking the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau wine in November and the Festival of Lights and Christmas Markets of December round off a lively Lyon year!
