This cosy fishing village is a picture postcard of coloured boats bobbing in a tranquil blue harbour. No neon lights or night clubs here; just seafood by the bucket load, cosy cafes, open air markets, a pretty little beach and some truly unforgettable sunsets.
Los Abrigos is just a 10 minute drive from Tenerife Airport. Take the TF1 then exit at gate 62 for the TF65 to Los Abrigos. Keep right and follow the signs to the centre.
San Cristobal de la Laguna
This place has a jewel of a historic centre with narrow cobbled streets lined with houses of many colours, elegant villas and some UNESCO protected colonial architecture. Whitewashed cottages hide around corners while this idyllic town nestles protectively amid the sweeping green flower-strewn hills. Palm trees line the streets as do a selection of small shops and cafes ideal for whiling away the hours.
San Cristobal is less than an hour’s drive from Tenerife airport. From the TF1, take exit 6 towards La Laguna and merge on to the TF2. Take the left lane for the TF5 then take the exit for the TF13. Follow signs for San Cristobal or La Laguna.
With quieter beaches than in the south, some wonderful museums, two large department stores and some mouth-watering seafood, the bustling port city of Santa Cruz is worthy of being the island’s capital. Flea markets and food markets, colourful houses, lush green oases and friendly local bars make this a must see on any trip to the island.
Santa Cruz is just over an hour’s drive from Tenerife Airport. Take the main TF1 road when you exit the airport and follow signs for San Miguel. Take the exit for the TF657 then get on to the TF28. Take a left onto the TF656 and then on to the TF51 where you can follow signs for Santa Cruz. There is free on-street parking in many of the major resorts in Tenerife, as well as underground car parks and free over-ground car parks in the major resorts for example at Puerto de la Cruz. La Orotava has good street parking, La Laguna has a free car park on its outskirts (don’t try parking on the narrow winding streets in the centre) and Santa Cruz bus station has a very reasonably priced car park at the bus station. Some hotels in Tenerife offer free parking.
