FAQs about visiting Kozhikode

Kozhikode is generally considered safe for travellers. But you’ll want to exercise common sense and take standard precautions. Keep valuables secure and use licensed taxis after dark. Kerala culture is quite conservative — avoid public displays of affection and remember to dress modestly when visiting religious sites.
Winter is a great time to visit the city. The mild temperatures make it ideal for exploring Kozhikode’s mosques and beaches without the discomfort of scorching heat or heavy showers.
You’ll find a good range of budget and mid-range hotels, while food, transport and attractions tend to be reasonably priced. Spend your days enjoying the city’s free beaches and sample inexpensive street snacks along SM Street to keep costs low.
Two or three days will be enough time to enjoy sunsets on Kozhikode Beach, explore Mananchira Square and Tali Shiva Temple, and visit Kappad Beach. Have more time to spare? Extend your stay by a couple of days for backwater cruises and a visit to the Thusharagiri Waterfalls.
If you’re drawn to low-key beaches, beautiful sunsets and spicy food, Kozhikode delivers. It may not be Kerala’s glossiest coastal escape, but its authenticity makes it a standout choice if you’re keen to explore the region beyond the usual tourist route.
The Indian rupee (₹) is the official currency in Kozhikode. Cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but carrying some cash is useful for markets, taxis and small purchases.
Malayalam is the primary language spoken in Kozhikode. English and Hindi are also widely understood, particularly in hotels, restaurants and other tourist-facing businesses.
March is often the warmest month in Kozhikode, with average highs around 33°C. Expect hot, humid conditions typical of Kerala’s tropical coastal climate.
July is typically the coolest month in Kozhikode, when monsoon clouds bring lower daytime temperatures. Frequent rain showers make the weather feel noticeably cooler than the hotter months earlier in the year.
June is generally the wettest month, with average rainfall of about 56 centimetres as the southwest monsoon arrives. Showers can be intense, but they also bring cooler temperatures and lush scenery across the region.
