When the lake freezes over in November or December, the village turns into a postcard-perfect winter wonderland. You’ll find everything from ice skating and sleigh rides to winter campfires under the stars. Visit during the festive season for twinkling lights, carol singers, markets and appearances from Santa Claus.

Places to eat
The restaurants in Lake Louise range from fine dining to scenic bistros and laid-back cafes. The iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise resort has seven restaurants that serve up delights including fondue and wild game. Hike to tea houses if you like your food and drink with epic views. And don’t go home without trying Canada’s famous ‘poutine’ (french fries, gravy and cheese curds).
Shopping
Shopping is somewhat limited in this small village, but you can still uncover a unique treasure or two. Start at Samson Mall, where you can pick up souvenirs, homemade sweets and First Nations art. For a more upmarket experience, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise has speciality stores selling jewellery, leather goods, designer outdoor gear and luxury knitwear.
Family-friendly things to do
There are plenty of things to do with family in Lake Louise, especially if your crew’s adventurous. In winter, hit the slopes at Lake Louise Ski resort (kids lessons are available) and hike the Johnston Canyon Icewalk to see frozen waterfalls. In summer, go canoeing on the lake, and ride the Lake Louise Gondola for a chance to spot wild bears.
