A quick drive west of Tbilisi will land you in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mtskheta - the entire town is a heritage site! In the past five years the government has poured money into renovating this area so in certain areas it can feel sterile and touristy. However, Mtkskheta's rich history is fascinating and it's surroundings idyllic.
The weddings and Disney-like restoration can easily make Mtskheta feel like a tourist trap. Don't be distracted. There are a few gems here. Avoid the shops and head straight to the historic highlights -- Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (in the city center) and Jvari Church (on a hillside overlooking the city). The Khareba tasting room and wine shop also makes for a nice stop.
