One of the most sacred cities to Hindus Haridwar located on the Ganges is a place of deep spiritual activity. It is fantastically colorful to witness Indians from all over the country to come to bath in the sacred waters. It can become extremely crowded with pilgrims and I do not recommend for those that have a difficulty with crowds, But I found it fascinating especially around 6:30 pm when the "puja" is given.

A much, much cleaner alternative to Varnasi, Haridwar offers an equally incredible look at life along the holy Ganges River. While Varnasi certainly gets all the hype (and deservedly so), it's also become a very touristy and notoriously filthy spot that repulsed many foreign travelers I met in India (both because of aggressive touts and the pollution). Haridwar (and nearby Rishikesh) have the distinct advantage of being upriver from most cities along the river, meaning that the water is still quite clean. You can still see the awe-inspiring puja rituals at night, where thousands gather to pray and offer the river goddess floating baskets of flaming flowers (you read that right, and it's quite a sight), but you won't deal with nearly as much hassle.
