Budget
For the most affordable Rome experience, visiting in the off-season is the way to go – room rates and entrance queues are both shorter outside summer. Markets and inexpensive restaurants keep meal costs around 15 euros (€), and a morning cappuccino comes in at under €2. Pair it with a cornetto (Italian croissant) for a proper Roman breakfast.
Getting around Rome
The capital is straightforward to navigate thanks to an excellent public transport system. Rome's streets are made for walking, but buses and trams cover the distance between major attractions. A MetroBus 48- or 72-hour ticket gives unlimited public transport access. For relief from the summer heat, an air-conditioned taxi is a comfy alternative.
Day trips from Rome
Naples, just an hour by train, is one of Italy's most culturally rich cities – and its claim to the world's best pizza is hard to argue with. The ruins of Pompeii are a short distance further south and well worth the journey. And the hilltop village of Orvieto has something for everyone, from historic wineries to lively trattorias.
