Budget
Madrid's many parks and free admission days at top museums make it a genuinely affordable city to visit. Fill up on tapas for about 15 euros (€), and a morning cappuccino or afternoon beer comes in under €4. Short taxi rides cost about €7.
Getting around Madrid
A Tourist Travel Pass is well worth picking up – it covers the metro, buses, light rail and Renfe suburban trains and can be bought at any station. For an eco-friendly and enjoyable way to get around, over 7,500 electric bikes are available at docking stations across the city.
Day trips from Madrid
The medieval city of Toledo is just half an hour away by train – wander its narrow streets, take in the architecture and meet fifth-generation swordsmiths. High-speed trains north reach Segovia in under 30 minutes, where a first-century Roman aqueduct and the fairy-tale Alcázar castle await. To the west, the ancient city of Ávila is known for its Gothic cathedral and well-preserved medieval walls.
