Edinburgh Airport is Scotland’s busiest airport and, as of 2016, the 6th busiest airport across the whole of the UK. The airport is situated 9.3km west of Edinburgh city centre. Edinburgh Airport offers flights to Irish cities including Dublin, Knock, and Cork.


Edinburgh Airport was originally a British Airforce defence base during the First World War. The first commercial services launched in the 1940s, initially offering flights between Edinburgh and London. Edinburgh Airport’s first international route, between Dublin and Edinburgh, launched in 1962. This soon expanded to include direct flights to Paris, Brussels, and Copenhagen. In 2015, more than 11 million passengers passed through Edinburgh Airport.

Getting to & from the Airport


Edinburgh Airport is situated just off Glasgow Road. The journey typically takes around 25 minutes. Long-term and short-term parking is available at Edinburgh Airport. There’s a £1 charge for dropping off passengers. Car hire at Edinburgh Airport is available from several car hire companies including Hertz, Sixt, Dollar, Thrifty, Alamo, National Car, Avis, Budget, Europcar and Enterprise.



Edinburgh Trams offer a regular service between Edinburgh Airport and the city centre. The journey time typically takes 36-38 minutes. The first service from Edinburgh Airport is at 6:18am, and the first service from York Place is at 5:30am. The last departure from Edinburgh Airport is at 10:48pm, and the last departure from York Place is at 11.30pm. A return ticket costs £8.50 for adults or £4.50 for children.



An express bus service (Airlink 100) runs between Edinburgh Airport and Waverly Bridge in Edinburgh City Centre. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. A return ticket costs £7.50 for adults. Discounted tickets are available for children. The Airlink service between Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh city centre runs every 10 minutes between 4:30 am and 11:55pm. Local buses also call at the airport, with a ticket price of £1.60.



A taxi rank with metered taxis is located directly outside of Edinburgh Airport. The journey time from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre is typically around 30 minutes.
