Tenerife Travel Guide

Introduction to Tenerife

This volcanic Canary Island is best known for it's black, white and yellow sand beaches, the epic resorts and plentiful rock climbing and cycling opportunities. The huge variety of hotels, resorts and little towns in the countryside make it the perfect sunny escape.

The capital, Santa Cruz, is in the North of the island, whereas the south is home to many family friendly resorts such as the Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. There are 10 Blue Flag beaches in Tenerife, and El Medano is a completely reserved coastal area, so you know there are plenty of opportunities for sunbathing! Need to cool down? The artLandya Doll Museum is a truly alternative day trip to most other activities in Tenerife.

If getting active is more your thing, the mountains and cycling routes in Teide, Las Montanas de Anaga and Masca are a real treat. Just make sure to coincide your visit with spring to avoid baking temperatures and burning rubber!

Other things to do in Tenerife

If you're travelling with the family, Tenerife is a great place to be. The Siam Park is a huge water park, modelled on Thai architecture, and the Loro Parque can be enjoyed by all – this world famous animal adventure park is located in Puerta de la Cruz on the north side of the island.

When it comes to family friendly resorts, you're spoilt for choice: Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas have plenty of family friendly hotels complete with safe Blue Flag beaches, kids clubs and great restaurants.

Don't go thinking Tenerife is just for families though, the Old Towns in Orotava and La Laguna in the north are picture perfect and great for exploring with your camera or partner in tow. The small bars are full of Spanish charm, and La Laguna also has a rather lively student population. If you fancy continuing the party on late into the night, the capital of Santa Cruz is great for partying the Spanish way – late, with lots of sangria. Playa de Las Americas is an old favourite with 18-30's style holidays too.

Tenerife is also a great place for active holidays. There are 8 golf courses here where you can play all year round, and Mt Teide is a playground for cyclists. Of course, you could nip up the mountain as part of your road trip too!

Our favourite things to do in Tenerife

Eating and drinking in Tenerife

As an island, Tenerife have their own tapas dishes, as well as plenty of seafood in most restaurants. Whilst you're here you'll see plenty of papas arrugadas (Canarian wrinkled potatoes), which are baked potatoes served with red pepper sauce. Ropa vieja – meat stew, mojo – spiced sauce, and baifo – young goat, are other Tenerifian favourites. When you go to order seafood, you'll notice plenty of fish 'a la plancha', which means on the grill.

Tenerife also produces incredible honey, particularly in the mountainous regions to the centre and the north. You can hunt out the suppliers in the hills, or bring home a jar from the markets in Santa Cruz.

Of course, fare from home is never far away, and if you're just craving a burger and chips you'll find plenty of international restaurants around the main resorts.

Tenerife climate

Tenerife is on the same latitude as the Sahara desert, and whilst it enjoys year round sunshine, the temperature can drop extremely low during the night in winter. In summer, the temperature drifts between 24–28°.

When to go to Tenerife

Tenerife experiences some of it's most golden weather between May and October, but you can get great last minute deals around Christmas too. If you'd like to climb Mt Teide, winter isn't a great time to visit because of the snowfall atop the mountain, but spring and autumn provide brilliant climbing conditions.
