Enter at your own risk!! Good Luck!!

Within 15 mins of booking this hostel, I received a message from the owner saying he could collect us from the airport for €15 to which I replied that we were in a different part of Crete and would be arriving by bus. I asked where the nearest bus stop was and he responded, saying it was 1km away; he did not offer to collect us from the bus stop.
Upon arrival, we were met by another guest who said the owner would be here in 10 mins, however; he could show us to our room which he did.
About 15 mins later, George introduced himself to my partner in the kitchen and then to me as I walked into to say hello. He asked me to fill in a form with my details and passport number which I proceeded to do. As I went to enter my partner's information, he shouted abruptly saying he only needed the details of the person who made the booking. I told him I had put both our names on the booking, hence entering my partner's details but he insisted it was only the lead person's details required on the form.
My partner and I were shocked at George's tone and demeanor.
Having settled in, I asked George if it would be possible arrange to transport for us to go in to Heraklion City centre; George said he could take us but it would cost €20. I told him it was fine, that we'd take the bus from the main road which we easily did. The journey took all of 10 to 13 minutes on the bus and cost less than €5 for us both.
The hostel itself is situated 1 km away from the main street and adjacent to a dual carriage way. There is a supermarket and some restaurants on the main street and the beach is approx a 25 minute walk away.
George lives in one of the rooms in the hostel.
We had use of the kitchen which had all the essentials, (cooker, fridge, utensils and cutlery).
We were given a small bath towel and a beach towel to use during our stay between both of us for 2 nights.
The night before we were leaving, I messaged George asking if he could drop us to the airport in the morning as we did not have any numbers for a taxi - he said yes. The journey to the airport is all of a 7 minute drive if that.
On the morning we were leaving, my partner went to heat up some food in the oven which we had brought the evening before. He left a box which was almost FULL of food on the worktop whilst some of it was heating and came back to our room. I went into the kitchen shortly afterwards to wash some cups and found George there. He asked what time we would be ready and I told him 11.30am. I noticed he had a box of food in his hand which looked exactly like our box but thought, hmm, he couldn't be standing there with our box, he must have got his from the same place As my partner walked into the kitchen, George was finishing off our chat; he told my partner he 'looked cute', chuckled and proceeded to go down the stairs. I asked my partner if the box on the worktop was ours to which he replied yes!! We couldn't believe George had blatantly stood in our faces with OUR food and walked off with it!!
My partner said he was going to put the rest of the food from the box into heat once the food in the oven was done.
Anyway, at 11.30am, we went down with our luggage and followed George to our transportation to the airport which was no car; it was a builder's van My partner put our luggage in the back of the van and held on to our laptop backpack but George 'told' us we had to put it in the back. We told him no and brought it to the front with us. The ride to the airport as previously mentioned approx 7 minutes due to having to go round a one way system.
As we got into the van, George asked us if we had cash to give him for our journey and we told him yes. I asked George if he would mind stopping at the supermarket on the main road for a couple of minutes as I wanted to get something; he rudely asked me what I wanted to get, saying it was in the opposite direction. In fact, it would have taken him 10 seconds from turning onto the main road. I told him it was fine, just take us to the airport.
At the airport, I asked George how much we owed him for the trip to which he responded €20. €20?! Again, we couldn't believe what we had heard. He then quickly said, 'oh but you can give me €15'.
My partner took out a €10 note and began counting out the change to make up the remaining €5; George shouted at us saying 'I asked if you had cash and you said yes!! I reminded George we were leaving Greece and didn't need the euros anymore so were merely trying to get rid of our change. He huffed and puffed. In the end, we were 20 cents short of €5 which George refused to accept so we gave him a €10 note instead. George pulled out a wad of around €500 and gave us our €5 change.
As George drove off, (Thank God!), we were approached by a gentleman who showed us his ID and introduced himself as the taxi rank controller. He said he had seen us give George money and asked if he was a taxi driver. I told him George was the hostel owner where we stayed. The controller was horrified!! He said hotel owners who drop customers to the airport in their personal transport should not be and are not allowed to charge or drop off in unauthorised vehicles!! Especially in a clapped out van!! He went on to ask the name of the place where we stayed so I told him. The controller said he had taken a picture of George, his van and registration and of him taking money from us and he would be reporting him to the authorities.
If you wish to book a stay at Saint George's Hostel be it at your own risk!!
Do not expect to be greeted by a warm and welcoming host and definitely do not expect any hospitality!!!
We couldn't wait to leave and will not be returning again!!
Proper Flop Show!!!

A fuir
