Akumal has grown so much in the last 15 years, despite repeated visits by tropical storms - it's a flourishing resort destination. There's a lot of great spots to go snorkeling in the area. If you stick to the crescent shaped Akumal Bay - you'll see sea turtles and have a lot more competition from other tourists and little boats. There's also a local requirement to wear a personal flotation device to ensure you don't brush against the reef by accident. More proficient swimmers should bring, borrow or rent gear and head off to beaches solo (X-cacel is a good one) to find reefs and fish to admire. The little tourist village of Akumal has several restaurants - some good vegetarian options - and plenty of opportunity to meet locals if you step away from the tourist area.

This fantastic little town on a small small cove is home to hundreds of giant sea turtles. Snorkelling here is a must as you literally swim with these calm ocean giants. The bay is shallow and clear which means you are almost guaranteed you will see the turtles close up. This is not a theme park or a pay amusement site but rather is a regional turtle preserve. A few of the snorkel shops on the beach will rent equipment and give you a quick lesson. The white sand beach also has a great open air restaurant. And, if you want to stay the night, several small boutique hotels are nestled right on the beach. To get there, take a half hour ride from the bus station in downtown Playa (these buses are very clean, safe and even luxurious - and are very inexpensive!). Akumal is a very special place that is not to be missed.
