Practical Information
You need your passport with you when you’re flying out with the UK. There are printers in the check-in area of DublinAirport, so there is no need to panic if you forget to print your boarding pass. If you have a smartphone you can store your boarding card electronically on your phone. Security can scan the e-barcode so you don’t need to worry about paper at all.
We recommend leaving plenty of time at the airport, so try not to arrive any later than one hour before your flight is due to depart. Queues at security are longer at weekends and during school holidays, so it’s worth giving yourself extra time.
What to expect in Bucharest
Bucharest, recently joining the EU, is a fascinating mix of stark Communist architecture, breath-taking Orthodox churches and contemporary glass structures. Wide tree-lined boulevards boast brutalist blocks of flats while large leafy green, sculpture strewn parks take the edge off all the concrete. The stunning Atheneum is perhaps the city’s most classically beautiful piece of architecture, giving lectures and concerts all year round, while the Palace of the Parliament, commissioned by Ceausescu himself remains a living example of extraordinary excess and despotic grandeur. Explore Byzantine chapels, elegant mansions, historic antique shops and ancient courts created by Vlad the Impaler. Dine in fabulous restaurants serving international cuisine and of course plenty of Transylvanian delicacies, or while away the evenings in hip bars and live music venues. Visit museums, take boats rides on lakes, stroll through majestic sweeping squares and marvel at the eclectic tastes of this enchanting city.
The best time to visit Bucharest is in the spring when temperatures are pleasantly warm and tourist numbers are not at their peak. Summers can be stiflingly hot and see the most visitors to the city. May is popular with visitors as this is when many local festivals take place celebrating everything from music and crafts to beer. Autumn is usually still warm while winters often bring snow and bitterly cold temperatures.
Bucharest is still a very cheap place to visit with a beer costing from £1*, breakfast from £2.50* and dinner for one from £5* upwards. A ticket for the Palace of the Parliament is approximately £4* while a museum ticket is from around £1*. Accommodation is available on most budgets from youth hostels to B&Bs and luxury hotels.
