Unless you walk around very early or late the streets are infested with crowds and uninspired restaurants and wall to wall guest houses. It is surrounded by magnificent scenery and places to visit.
Garmisch Partenkirchen is just over an hour from Munich and a charming bavarian town. It is made up actually of two towns, the livelier Garmische which has its centre in a pedestrian lane, Am Kurpark, running between the squares of Richard Strauss Platz and Marienplatz full of branded stores, flea market on weekends, cafes, bars, restaurants and even sausage and fruit stands. Partenkirchen, the older town, is centered on the quiet, cobblestoned Ludwigstrasse. The narrow street is lined with historic buildings, decorated with charming frescoes. The whole village is better to be explored on foot although we took a tram to see the sights of Partenkirchen.
Picturesque village in Bavaria, Germany. Access to the Alspitze and Zugspitze ski areas. I lived there for a ski season. The snow sucked the year I was there, but loved everything else about this town.
If you are planning a trip to Garmisch, I'd recommend renting one of the Freiraum Zentral lofts. The one we're staying in has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a kids room filled with toys and a bunk bed! There's also a lovely balcony with a stunning view of the town and mountains. Oh and let's not forget the fully stocked kitchen...
