Hotels in Southampton

Southampton is the largest city in Hampshire, just a short train ride away from London. Historically, it’s always been a significant city due to it’s position on the south coast of England, so the city is decked with a variety of different architecture – check out the town walls, Bargate and Netley Abbey if you’re into old British ruins. Thanks to the universities based in Southampton, it’s now got a lively population, fuelling the city centre’s shopping, drinking and eating establishments. There are plenty of places to stay inside the city centre, on the coast, and close to the landmarks around Southampton. If you know you need to catch an early flight, check out the hotels near Southampton Airport too – the city is well connected with trains and buses.

City Centre

Palmerston park, the University and the stadiums in Southampton’s city centre mean that it’s a pretty popular place to stay, but there’s more to the city centre than that. Go and check out Bargate shopping mall, or one of the restaurants along the High Street. There are plenty of hotels here from the downright affordable guesthouses to the 5 star UK hotel branches you find everywhere. Many of the city’s bars, pubs and clubs lie between the coast of the south west and the city centre, so stay in this area if you’re here to explore that student nightlife.

The Pier

The pier is just to the south west of the city centre, so it’s still close to the shops but it comes with the seaside vibe of a coastal town. There are a few hotels around here that are actually boutique or B&Bs, perfect for romantic little getaways in Southampton.

Netley Abbey

Netley Abbey is far outside of the city, but it’s such a popular landmark that there are now bars, restaurants and hotels close by to both the abbey and many of the great parks in the area.

Ocean Village

The pier, the marina and the docks make up Southampton’s new development of the ocean village. Expect a few apartments with an ocean view and one or two hotels, but many of the hotels are set further back into the city centre.

The airport is situated just outside of the city in the northeast. You can easily reach it from the city centre, and there are plenty of affordable hotels around the terminals too.
