Where to hire a car at Ercan Airport
There is one in house car hire provider in the arrivals hall of Ercan Airport. It’s strongly recommended that you organize your car hire before arriving at Ercan, as choice is limited.
Petrol stations close at Ercan Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
The closest petrol stations are in Strovolos, which is across the border in South Cyprus. It takes about 40 minutes to reach Strovolos. Head east when you exit the airport, and drive along Gazimagusa Lefkosa Anayolu for 16km. Bare left when you come to a cross roads, and drive towards Lefkosa. Continue on this road, over the roundabouts, to Αιγύπτου. Take Στασίνου to Λάρνακος in Lefkoşa, and the petrol station will be on your right.
Driving around at Ercan Airport
Ercan Airport is in the centre of Northern Cyprus, away from the coast. However, Ercan is well connected by a few major roads, and Cyprus doesn’t take long to drive around. The airport is set in the centre of the country, and isn’t surrounded by any immediate towns.
Northern Cyprus doesn’t have heavily developed roads, whereas southern Cyprus is slightly more developed. Some car hire companies may not allow you to drive into the south. If you are planning on driving in Northern Cyprus, plan out your route first, as many of the road signs are in Cypriot or Greek.
Popular destinations to drive to from Ercan Airport
North Coast & Girne
Girne is a coastal city on the northeastern edge of Cyprus. This harbour is a historic fishing port, but now it’s developed a handful of family friendly hotels too.
It only takes half an hour to reach it from the airport. Head east when you leave the airport, then turn left again as if you were heading to Lefkosa. Instead of taking the first exit at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards Lefkosa Girne on the K25.
Famagusta Bay is in the south of northern Cyprus, and it forms a horseshoe shaped bay that’s great for swimming and stand up paddle boarding.
When leaving the airport, head east towards Lefkosa on Lefkoşa-Gazimağusa Anayolu to İbrahim Hasan Caddesi in Gazimağusa. Continue for 48km, and continue on Ibrahim Hasan Ceddesi. Take Fikret Demirag Sokak
Protaras is a very popular destination in Cyprus for its beach resorts and hotels. Occasionally it can get crowded, especially during summer, which is when it is advisable not to drive a car into the town. There are plenty of great camping spots around here too.
Head east when leaving the airport, and continue for 35km to reach the A3. Continue on the A3 to Πρωταράς, Kıbrıs for another 36km, and you’ll find yourself driving around the tip of Protaras. There are plenty of hotels here, and driving here is generally easy going as it’s slightly more developed.
